That hit on RJ Umberger was a thing of beauty
Steve Downie was filth
Another great hit:
Kane doing God's work.
I always thought the Lindros hit by Stevens was an elbow. And the Kariya hit was late. But yeah those were thunderous hits though.
Yeah that was certainly dirty, considering he didn't have the puck.
But what do you think of this dirty hit? I thought this is one of the dirtiest hits of all time.
I mentioned in a different post on here.
The Kariya one IMO was legal, but unnecessary. It was a bang bang play. Kariya had just passed the puck and unfortunately was following the puck. Ignoring the fact that it was the playoffs, most of these pros don't go out of their way to injure someone and take away their livelihood. They push the boundaries but ultimately, most won't go to hurt people. You'll see it occassionally where a guy yells out "heads up" if they realise they're going to hit someone with their head down. On the hit, he could've easily just bumped him over but chose to run him. Again, bang bang, Kariya could have just as easily kept hold of the puck.
My view and opinion of the hit hasn't changed in 15 odd years
A couple more good one's to watch.
This was you and me talking about it I think.
I remember when I first saw the Kariya one I thought Kariya was dead.
Franchise-altering hit IMO
Fans were furious that the team was considered "soft" for not retaliating hard enough for the hit and so the following offseason the Sabres basically filled their team to the brim with career goons like Steve Ott and John Scott so that they would be "tough" and have sucked ever since
THere was a period of time in the 80s where the Sabres had a line up chalk full of borderline goons: Kevin McGuire, Larry Playfair, King Kong Korab, and Clark Gilles.
Larry Playfair was particularly dangerous in a fight. Probably mostly forgotten now but Playfair was feared by just about everyone when he played.
I never thought about running goalies because it was dumb lol. They wear more gear than you, and blockers to the head hurt.
Wensink on Playfair
i believe this was Playfair’s first shift and first time ever touching the puck in the NHL
You can see how much that Rome hit on Horton changed that series given how Thomas gives zero fucks anymore and just goes right after Henrik
Just about any hit, any time Vladimir Konstantinov was on the ice in the late 90s, before he got wrecked in the car accident. Nobody could consistently stand up to him. The fucking Redwings back then, with Yzerman and the Russians at the old Joe Louis Arena was hockey GOAT.
He still got merked by Probert though, unsurprisingly
Separate names with a comma.
