A nerd is first and foremost a consumer. That is what nerd culture is all about: consumption. Brand loyalty.

What best represents nerd culture these days? Big Bang Theory. Comic Con. I have never watched an episode of BBT but I know these dorks love their comic book superheroes and other franchises. Nerdom revolves around franchises and brands. Star Wars. Super heroes. The loyalty and obsession with them.

These Funko Pop figures. lol. Nerds buy the products. I buy the stocks. In this same vein, people like Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are not nerds. Being smart and being into science or tech or whatever does not make one a nerd, being a mindless consumer does.

I've always thought of a nerd as someone who's really into math, science etc.

Whereas what TS described I've always thought of as a geek.

Nerd = obsessed with science, math and tech etc.

Geek = obsessed with particular pop culture, usually comics, games, TV shows etc.

For a long time I thought this was the accepted difference, but I've come to realize it may be a distinction I've invented myself.

No thats geeks youre referring too. Nerds are people like Bill Gates. Usually very skilled in a particular discipline, especially computer programming.

I think the term is defined by how many posts you make about the stock market on an MMA forum.

What would really hurt nerds is if Disney and other companies didn't keep taking money out of your pocket year after year by rehashing the same idea. I don't know how they would live without Terminator remakes. I mean that first sticky thread in this forum. All the rehashed garbage coming out of Hollywood. It is like they take a franchise and make it infinitely divisible. It goes against atomic theory. That eventually you reach small particles/pieces that can no longer be broken off anymore. But with nerds, nothing is elementary or fundamental. It is an endless pit of consumption.

That could work but we got the Big Bang dorks who are both. The two types have been conflated and have a lot of overlap.

Are dorks on BBT nerds or geeks?

Being intelligent is the ultimate prerequisite for the term. Generally they're into stem, or Finance... ie something quantitative like that.

It's funny a lot of people with double digit IQ's are trying say "I'm a nerd" now. Why? so they can tell themselves and trick others into believing they're intelligent when they know they are not. Like people who use social media to proclaim their love for science, jeeesus if a lot of these people even tried taking something as basic as physics 11 I think their heads would explode.

A geek is someone whos enthusiastic on a certain subject or field. Doesn't have to be an intellectual. A geek would be someone who follows Anime religiously.
A nerd is someone who is studious and an intellectual and is enthusiastic about a certain subject or field that is related to something studious, most likely math or science related.
A dork is someone who would likely physically appear like the other two, but is just a dumb clumsy person.
Likely would be looked at as a nerd or geek until you figured out he isn't smart or really dedicated to anything. Making him a dork.

Somebody that lack physical/character traits to be socially successful,(gain respect, fuck girls, get friends) that isolate himself (or stick to other nerds) to some areas where he feel good/expert like technology/study and exagerately stick to some things (comics/videogames etc) as form of escapism

In recent years the nerd / not-nerd thing became a large shade though, as now everybody goes on internet, play videogames etc

It feel more a thing of who was teenager in the 80s, after that many nerd things became slowly more normal for everybody

If anything is seen as strange don't be on social media these days

Some nice comments in here. I think we are making progress on the subject. The lines have been blurred in recent years and this needs to be sorted out. I have rethought my original position and now realize it ain't so simple.

Yes, speaking of the 80s I was just reading something on how Stranger Things is a more realistic take of nerds than BBT. It can simply be uncool outcasts. Like the Goonies too.

Plus Juan on the distinction between nerds and geeks. OP described geeks, not nerds.

    I’m a nerd.

I’m tall and awkward and goofy but pretty smart.

I don’t have a lot of friends but have a few good ones.

Girls never liked me when I was a kid but when I finished University and got a good job and a nice car and a nice body and tattoos they started throwing themselves at me.

I like anime and video games and Harry Potter fanfiction and other nerd things.

I think it’s okay to be a nerd.

Nerd used to imply that you were smart. It seems like this newer fad of proclaiming one's nerd-dom, "I'm a total nerd" has become the domain of, well, anybody. Collecting comic books and action figures seems to be the major requirement today, no smarts needed. I've found that most people who emphatically self identify as nerds are usually losers, or super attractive model/actor types who use it as a false display of humility or some appeal to the general public to make it seem like "I'm one of you".
