what is a "gate keeper"?

I see this term used alot both in the jiu jitsu and MMA worlds. What is a gate keeper???

In MMA, it is someone who is a solid fighter, but middle of the pack and will never be a title contender and falls short against the top tier of the division.

For example, Kurt Pelligrino and Joe Stevenson.

In BJJ, a four stripe white belt.

4 stripe white belt, usually starts their own team in a garage and shows up to the worlds and rains fire on all opponents.

To be honest, I only heard the term when nocturno was creating epic threads.

One of those guys that is always just short of being in the top level, but if you beat them it pushes you into the top level.
