This year we celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Hulk Hogan beating the Iron Sheik for the WWF Title in Madison Square Garden 1/23/1984. Though many consider this the "birth" of Hulkamania, it had indeed been running wild
    brother
for quite a while, including Hulk's great run in the AWA.

The story goes per Sheiky baby that Mr. Coach Verne Gagne offered him $100,000 to break that jabroni's leg. Verne, Greg and others have denied the claim of the bounty on the Hulk's leg, but Sheik has maintained his stance. The Sheik, being an honorable man, or more likely knowing the money he was making and would be for the foreseeable future, opted to do the job to the Hulkster.

But. . .What if Sheiky Baby decided to break da jabroni's leg? There a few different initial scenarios in play:

    1. Break Hulk's leg, retain the title and see what happens
    2. Ditto, but jump to the AWA with the belt, legitimizing even more the AWA and Sheik
    3. Break Hulk's leg, BUT drop the title anyways, putting Hulk on the shelf, crippling his breakout run

Would the Sheik have even escaped the Garden alive that night? No doubt he was a legitimate shooter, but as Hacksaw once famously said, wrestling locker rooms in those days were "Like a snake pit of tough guys". On the card that night were names like Orndorff, Andre, The Samoans, etc.

What say you? Assuming Sheik does the deed, where does he go from here? Would the AWA flatly deny their involvement?(surely) Does it diminish Hulk's run or simply delay it? Is wrestling less entertainment and more "wrestling" today, or was that always a foregone conclusion? Would VKM as per usual find a way to make chicken salad out of chicken shit?

Hogan's run gets delayed a few months....he comes back a sympathetic baby-face out for revenge (provided Sheik isn't fired and doesn't get the shit kicked out of him)

Sheik appearing on AWA TV with the belt leads to huge lawsuits and Vince doubles down on taking all of Verne's talent even quicker than he did in real life.

Hulk comes back in 6-12 months and things continue on from there. If anything, Hogan being out might give Sgt. Slaughter a larger platform to star, but he wouldn't have the Hogan level mainstream impact. 1984 was largely a set up year anyway, but Hogan not being there to latch onto Cyndi Lauper while she was the hottest young pop star in the world may have hurt his crossover appeal some. Even pushing Lauper back six months or so hurts her impact. Madonna would knock her off as the top young act in 85/86.

Sheik gets the shit beat out of him by the four shooters in the back if the crowd didn’t jump him and nobody ever works with him in a major org again while Hogan walks around with a cast and is a bigger face than Dusty when the work version happened.

Remember Hulk got his leg broken when he turned up for his first day of training because the old skool guys thought he was a body builder idiot and he came back. AWA Hulk was already over more than anybody in the history of that org.
