Picture a world where Conor McGregor loses to Donald Cerrone. That very well could become a reality tonight (Jan. 18) [ring rust, gas tank, beta coaches, etc.]. While all the stars seem to be aligning for the “Notorious” one to emerge victorious tonight, what if he doesn’t? Here are four possible directions:

1. Trilogy Bout with Nate Diaz

It’s safe to say that even if McGregor falls to Cerrone tonight, there would still be demand for a trilogy fight against Nate Diaz. McGregor and Diaz are 1-1 against one another. Diaz submitted McGregor back in March 2016. In August of that same year, McGregor scored a majority decision win in their rematch.

. . .

2. Rematch with Max Holloway

When McGregor and Holloway shared the Octagon back in Aug. 2013, they were both young in their UFC runs. Going into the bout, McGregor had just one fight under the UFC banner while Holloway had five fights for the organization. McGregor ended up scoring a unanimous decision victory.

. . .

3. Second Showdown with Dustin Poirier

Speaking of rematches, Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier 2 certainly has its audience. Similar to the Holloway matchup, McGregor and “The Diamond” collided early in their time with the UFC. While Poirier was three years into his UFC run, he was still far from his peak. McGregor’s star power continued to rise when he stopped Poirier via TKO in the opening frame.

4. Retirement

Some are likely to argue that McGregor would still pursue a return to the boxing ring if he loses at UFC 246. The problem is, how likely is it that the big names such as Manny Pacquiao will still see value in fighting someone who hasn’t earned a victory since Nov. 2016? At that point, McGregor’s star power as a combat sports athlete would have to be called into question.

Whatever he and Dana want.

The correct answer isn't even in your poll, He will obviously rematch cerrone.
Yep. Likely another "I fought a bigger man" and a bunch of hype that Conor is so brave for wanting the rematch

If he loses, strip Khabib and give the title. It's better for business Conor is more popular

The Nate that just whooed Pettis would wreck Conor in a trilogy.

Conors main weapon in breaking down Diaz was leg kicks, Nate checks leg kicks now and broke Pettis’s foot with a check and took away that weapon in round 1. Conor w/o being able to leg kick Nate gets finished.

well it would prove that he was by far the most overated mma fighter on the planet him and ronda ironically enough

i doubt he will lose given donald is a purist thai fighter doesnt have good hands and isnt to great defensively and is very flat footed but conor doesnt have power at 155 like he did at 145 im sure conor will make excuses for him going up 2 weight classes which is retarded cause donald fought the majority of his career at 155 so they basically dont have to cut weight but maybe 10 pounds

It would just mean that he is not a true welterweight and needs to go back to lightweight. If you remember Conor started as a featherweight who moved up to lightweight to challenge for the belt (he only has two fights as a LW in the UFC where he is 1-1, and only 2 fights as a WW vs. Diaz where he is also 1-1, but he is undefeated in the UFC as a featherweight)
Sounds like the excuse the UFC has ready for casuals and nut huggers. Sad.

This is not a 170 fight. Its a 155 with both guys just not cutting water. Thats it. Conor is not a 170 fighter. He lost to Nate Diaz (twice IMO)

Conor is a middle of the pack fighter at 55. Nothing else. He has trouble with everyone in the top 10.

He'll take a few months off. He'll probably switch camps and then reemerge, claiming to be a new man and reenergized, etc. Rinse, repeat.

Probably drop to 155 & fight a guy like Yaquinta.

Diaz vs Cerrone 2 would make sense for both Nate & Cowboy imo

If he loses, put him in there with either Justin or Masvidal.

If Conor loses Dana is stilling going to press the title shot. Something about this fight proves Conor deserves the title shot, and that shows he’s not getting favoritism.

A cowboy rematch then a Diaz 3 fight. If he wins those 2 rematches he would fight Gaethe or rematch Dustin in lw then maybe his Beeb rematch then he retires either way.

lol at beta coaches

C'mon! I am not a fan of Conor, but lets be honest here. The guy have skills to demolish most people around his weight. How can a lost to Kabib and Mayweather take anything away from him. He might not be the best ever, but talking like he is going downhill because of those two fights is ridiculus at this point IMO.

The guy is a jerk, but he is smart and must have trained seriously for this bout. Unless Cowboy takes it to the ground, he will be finished before McGreggor looses his cardio.
I think you should read my post again without jumping to a knee jerk emotional reaction, you missed the point.

Can Conor beat many fighters?
Absolutely.

Now reduce that group to the subset of fighters which will justify an 8 figure payday.

Can he lose to all those guys? After 3 years of fucking around, not winning any fights, drinking, doing drugs and being a general fuckup.

You bet your sweet tits he can.

Look who he is talking about fighting next:

Usman
Khabib
Manny Pacquio
Floyd
Masvidal

Tell me which of those fights you think is a good matchup and clear win for Conor?

Masvidal is his best best chance and Jorge has excellent boxing and a granite chin, he is better than Conor on the ground and likely has better cardio, has been actively fighting solid fighters in MMA.

You need to consider the context. They aren’t going to pay Conor $20mil to fight Myles Jury or Diego, he is going to have to compete with the best of the best.

you don’t think he has a solid chance of losing each and every one of those matchups?

That would be the end of the sport. It would be obvious that a work was in progress. Maybe the Kinehan cartel has Conor's family hostage or some other nefarious scheme. Either way true MMA fans cannot accept a fraudulent outcome like you propose TS.

Damn i voted Nate Diaz 3 fast without seeing "retire", but ok trilogy and retire after

I'm pretty fucking far from being a Connor fan but when you list his achievements like that, you have to give respect. Having said that, losing to Donald would be bad. He hasn't fought in a while, lost his last matches pretty convincingly and Donald is kind of a gatekeeper, depending on your definition.
