What happens to McGregor's hype train if he loses tonight?

I hate starting another Conor thread, but I am quite curious as to what the fallout would be with a loss to Diaz. He's fighting an experienced guy at a higher weight class on short notice, it certainly can't be judged like a regular title fight, but Nate isn't exactly the number one guy at his weight and didn't have a fight camp (though this shouldn't effect him like others, it still is a disadvantage against someone so technical). Does a LW title fight become nothing but a fantasy? Would it have people doubt him as the GOAT or would they excuse it? I'm not sure anything but a decisive win is going to raise Conor's stock. Conor has a strange breed of fans, they are extremely emotional and love posturing, even a loss like this may shake them from him, but maybe they will stay loyal like Ronda's fans... Wait...

Back to FW and an Aldo rematch or Edgar...

In a stretch of logic RDA based on the Diaz fight being at 170 and short notice.

That aura will definitely take a hit, a guy like Frankie may eat that up and shake Conor even more.

Don't get me wrong, Conor has a better chance of being the first guy to stop a Diaz in maybe forever than for him to lose, but he could lose this fight if Nate shows up.

That's exactly how I see it and of course, Robbie fantasy is out of the question. Logic may be wondrously elastic though given Conor's value to UFC brass and his obvious anguish when making the 145 limit..

I bet some big bucks on Conor, but after seeing the twitch, I got my money back.

A loss tonight won't hurt him that bad. He's jumping up 25lbs, and it's not for a title, just for fun.

He could either drop back down to 145 or 155 and still make all kinds of huge paydays.

Considering he's fighting at 170-lbs, depending how he loses, it may not effect it.

he would still have the 145 belt. that is all.

Probably set something up on Fight Pass against Lentz or Guida

nothing, there is no "hype train"..... Conor is the real deal

Gonna happen soon. Maybe tonight.

Humility gets delivered when needed.

Ask Ronda.

I will still be a fan. Im a fan of his fighting style. I really don't think it's hype.

Still gets the rda fight imo

Dana loves the dude like its his favourite kid.

Anything but a Holm style beating he gets a go at rda.

No weight cut and his opponent has no real fight camp? If Conor can't win this then it's a massive blow for him.

Jesus this thread has been getting made a lot

The term 'hype train' stopped applying to Conor a long time ago.

Would depend entirely on how he lost really. If Nate KO'ed him stiff it would totally derail it

Honestly, probably nothing will happen to his hype train. It's not like he didn't just KO the consensus p4p #1 fighter in 13 seconds. Now he's moving from 145 lbs to 170 lbs to fight a top fighter from a higher weight class who has fought multiple times at 170, when he only had 3 months to bulk up for a fight at 155, never mind at 170. Just the fact that he took a dangerous fight like this is worth some respect; if he wins, cool, he beat a top guy at a higher weight class and proved he can fight at multiple weights, but nonetheless it's somebody who was dominated by his original opponent. If he loses, it could ruin his run at a higher weight class, even though it's at 170 and not 155.

To me, it's just a fight between two elite fighters, one who only had 3 months to move up 2 weight classes, and one who was already significantly larger and more experienced at the elite level, but only had a couple weeks to prepare for this fight specifically. Whoever loses the fight isn't going to lose any of my respect.
