suppose a champion were to go unbeaten for the remainder of his career (unlikely scenario but let's speculate).

what happens to a division if the champion were to retire? should the ufc set up a tournament or something or just have the number 1 and 2 fight it out for the belt? and what do you think the mindset of the new champion will be given that he never really beat the man to become the man.

it would probably go to one of the 2 main championship contenders after they fought, the winner would be known as an interim champ until he had defended his belt.

i think

A tournament would be fair in my opinion, but I dont think the UFC would do that

UFC doesn't seem too down on tournaments, they'd probably just get the consensus number 2 and 3 guys(or the Chael Sonnens and Nick Diaz's of the time) and set up a title match.

They just did it with the new weight class - 125.

They would either do a little 4-man tourney, or simply have the top 2 contenders fight a title fight and give the winner the belt. Pretty simple.

As far as the new champ not feeling fulfilled because he never beat the previous champ...that feeling would be fleeting if it existed at all. He'd be thrilled to have a UFC belt, and would proudly stand as the best active guy in that weight class.

when Andy retires then we may see, a tournament would be great

4 man tournament like at 125 and when they did at 155 all those years ago when it ended in a draw with Penn & Uno...

UFC would have Sonnen fight Urijah Faber so one of them could FINALLY be a UFC champ.

maybe a tourney. or whoever two fighters are tops in the division but hasnt faced each other yet will fight for it. whatever the best scenario is

This is a good question considering GSP and Silva are getting close to the age of retirement.(I don't see either one of them hanging around like Randy or Hendo) I would like to see a tournament I think it would be awesome if they had more than 4 guys, but that could leave a vacant title much longer than they would like.

The UFC seems to be anti-tournament... I would imagine if there is a clear number 1 and 2 in the division they would fight for the belt.

I'm all for an old-school Pride tourny format!

Tournaments are great, but with how difficult it's gotten with injuries, both real and 'questionable', as well as reffing and judging issues, the possibility for a tournament to actually be completed in timely manner is pretty slim. Just look at the SF HW GP. It looked incredible when it started, but by the time it was over, nobody even gave a damn anymore.

GSP is only 31 lol

That's a bad example. They lost two biggest favorites when Overeem left SF and Fedor lost to Bigfoot and it took over a year from them to finish the GP.

It's a perfect example, unexpected things happen and the organization ends up locked in to a format that is no longer desirable.

That's why every time the UFC does any kind of tournament style set up, it's either very small or very vague. For example, the WW 'tournament style thing' or what ever Dana always refers to it as, that's coming up. We all know what it is, but we all also know that if something happens that flashes a big dollar sign in Dana's face, he's gonna jump at it.

Also, Overeem leaving SF just backs up my argument further, his broken toe or whatever it was had nothing to do with his leaving the company. Zuffa wanted him in the UFC while he was still marketable so they made it happen.
