It's no secret that Jon Jones has been significantly less effective on the ground in recent fights.

What do sherdoggers think is the reason?

I think there are roughly three possible explanations;

1) Defense against Elbows on the ground has largely improved in the UFC

2) Jon Jones partying lifestyle and substance abuse has started to catch up to him.

3) Jones is now fighting clean and is therefore not able to be as effective.

Competition has improved. He also doesn't go for takedowns as much, which absolutely blows.

Number 4 too.

He’s finally getting past all the super old guys that were around and middle weights(almost). It’s not as easy to finish guys your age and your size.

No doubt Jon Jones is talented but he really did come in and rise up at the right time. He was the best of the new version of LHWs and he was competing against the old guard.

yeah easily the most fortuitous mma situation I’ve ever seen. Old and or small literally all the way up.

The whiners-in-denial thread.

Jones is the GOAT and won against the strongest competition ever. DEAL WITH IT.

Fighters nowadays have a more complete MMA game which includes training TDD. Guys nowadays also seem to be more athletic and Jonnis not on the juice anymore..:

Too many traumatic police flashbacks down there.. ..

Greg Jackson finally succeeded in turning the most dynamic fighter in history into a robot.

Part of it is IMHO who he was destroying, a lot of wrestlers who are not generally good on their backs plus Vera and a gassed Shogun.

I see guys getting slammed with elbow shots all the time in fights. so the first one is out...the only thing you can do, is the only thing you can do..is try and block it...to land ground strikes, you have to take the guy down first. which jones seems to be having trouble with...he hasn't landed a takedown since Gus. his takedowns are usually dependent on clinch and trip or clinch and drag the guy down...or up against the cage and grabs the legs. he doesn't have the same strength he once had...which could be due to him no longer using roids. he was never took guys down with a double leg in th the middle of the cage. and he's very reluctant to engage with guys on the cage anymore.

His style of fighting now is leg kicks, knee kicks, some body and high kicks...almost no punches, and ineffective take down attempts...He's simply not the fighter he once was...it's very obvious now...I was hesitant about admitting that for awhile..but it's obvious now.

jones vs reyes is actually one of my favorite fights to rewatch--Jones won guys deal with it

That’s a bit of a questionable take. Didn’t he dominate Ryan Bader, who was young, up and coming, and is now the Bellator HW champion? His wins over Gustafson and Cormier certainly show that his talent extended far beyond “the old guard”. Heck, Cormier is fighting for the HW title in a month! He’s handled size through out his career just fine. It’s only now in what feels like his fading years that he’s beginning to struggle with size.

But then beat DC twice. He's an enigma and will go down as the best ever. I hope he loses, but he will probably retire before then. Divisive champ for sure with his history of drugs and run-ins with the law. Fighting isn't for 'rational' people.
