there have been many a conversations about what constitutes a "blue belt" here. There have been some who say that a blue belt means that he or she "understands" jiu jitsu no matter how much time he or she has spet doing jiu jitsu (or perhaps a lack of time). Beyond the fact that it 's silly to talk about the qualifications of being a "cockroach" (i.e white and blue blets) in jiu-jitsu; what does it mean to "know, or understand" jiu jitsu?

IMHO, "knowing" jiu-jitsu is being able to "flow". You higher belts know what i am saying. Flowing is when you can trade techniqes and play a 50~70% speed/intensity game. It's great for warming up and it does wonders for your technique. IMHO that's what "knowing, or starting to understand jiu-jitsu" is. NOT tapping people out but being able to "flow" with your opponent.

i laughed when i saw this thread because for xmas my gf bought me a new gameness blue gi. She put the top on and took a pic with her camera phone and it had the caption "I know jujitsu". Got a laugh out of it. To your question, i agree that when you can flow and move without thinking you know jujitsu.

I think knowing Jiu-Jitsu means its a second nature to you in a hostile situation. I also believe that knowing Jiu-Jitsu means you can impart your knowledge of the art to other people by teaching.

Ya "knowing" Jiu Jitsu is Understanding the art and being able to flow and move with your opponent. Not the spazz or typical defense style as we all did when we first started learning.

I guess there will be a large amount of definitions being explained here but to know it means......Understanding and actually practicing and training the art extensively.

imo learning and knowing are mutually exclusive. you can say you 'know' more jiu jitsu than joe shmoe which i guess is what the topic is about, and imo is based on total skillset, not just subs or positioning or escaping, a combination of all 3. Not on flow either, because to control a spazzin opponent using jj, the ability to flow isnt going to cut it.
You cant say i know jj and expect to be able to learn anything more.

So basically what im saying is knowing jui jitsu is always relative - whoever is the better jits guy knows jits better. you can never know jui jitsu.

Are we talking BJJ, or Jujitsu in general. Becuase if you mean BJJ please clarify.

knowing the art of Jiu JItsu ..I guess being JJ or BJJ. I guess it stems from the same art and knowledge helps for both styles

It seems like every BJJ guy you meet, including myself, will always tell you that they do not yet know BJJ, but are trying to learn. I wonder if black belts consider themselves to "know" BJJ? I would think so.

i would think not:). but ill let you know when i get to black belt.

In my opinion, knowing jiujitsu starts when you are starting to become proficient at it. When you no longer get "stuck" and always have a few dependable moves from every position. So yeah I guess i agree with the guy above who said "when it becomes second nature in a hostile situation"

What do you mean 2nd nature?

you can never fully 'know' jiu jitsu, or any martial art for that matter.. thats one reason why i love it

I just got my blue, and I know just enough to know I don't know $h!+.

I think it's like anything else....you never really stop learning. Looking at it from the standpoint of professions, one could say we "practice" jiu jitsu.

My judo sensei says that when you get the Black Belt that is the time when you have learned the basics and can really start to understand judo

WOW. Ironically, when I got my green, my sensei told me I owned all of judo. I jis had to take it.:icon_chee j/k Bee.

I kinda don't get what you're asking and some people in this thread don't seem to either. But I'll still take a stab at it in hopes I get a gist of the question. I think "knowing" jiu-jitsu can be substituted with "learning". If someone says "I know jiujitsu" than I'll just kinda use common sense and assume they mean they're learning jiujitsu. Also I think a blue belt is someone who wears a blue belt in said martial arts. Could I tell you the difference between the day before I got my blue and the day after? Absolutely not.

Means none of the above if they can't handle themselves on the street.

Throw BJJ in to useless karate category!

If the general public knows how to defend BJJ? What do you think the average criminal is going to do?

And if all you're doing is training to compete and not be a better all around person who can defend themself?

You're useless and deserve (and likely will) get your ass kicked!

Just thought I'd save you the disappointment now!

Practice away!:icon_chee
