What do you do when starting from the knees?

I usually just pull guard because I refuse to play judo from the knees and get into like a ten minute tug of war. If I don't do that I go for an arm drag, a sort of single leg if I can, or last night I grabbed the collar and sleeve and did a sweep/trip type of thing. How about you?

It depends if it's timed or not, or my mood. I'm like 300lbs though, so I do what I want.

Sit on my ass. If they want to stay on their knees, good for me...but usually they stand. If they sit on their ass, I stand. It's rarely knee vs knee at my place, we don't like to midget wrestle.

Sit guard or take top of guard depending on who's more adamant about working their guard (isn't it funny when 2 guys both sit at the same time and kind of stare?), or do the midget judo (hey it's better than nothing)

300 pounders suck.

I got a guy whose 350 at my gym and I'm currently 215. His jujitsu ain't all that great, but if he gets on top of you, it's pretty hard to get him off. I can barely get full guard on his big ass.

ususally try some type of snap down or arm drag.don't like to pull guard.

It depends on what I am working on. For like a solid month, I pulled half guard. Then I pulled butterfly guard. I have even let myself be put in side control. Unless the guys a spaz, then I outwrestle him to show I could, then I pull guard next time.

Mainly, I put myself in positions I need to work on. Sparring for me is live training, not competition.

Edit: this is my 1000th post. In the grappling forum where it belongs :icon_chee

pull guard, force the guy to turtle, go for a roll, let them pull guard

I usually say, "you have a preference on where we start?" If not, then i just say ok, lets start in Xyz position.

i refuse to knee wrestle. A. I would smoke everybody because I am awesome at knee wrestling. B. Its ridiculous to waste time in a position that never actually happens, lets just get going on the non-imaginary positions.

enter someone's guard or pull guard. If my training parter has a good guard i will enter his guard, if he has a strong top game, i will pull guard.

if we actually start on our knees instead of starting in a fixed position I usually never start from my knees..I sit on my butt...if the other person sits on their butt I'll sit up and start to pass, otherwise if they stay on their knees I work open..but I really need to start working on sitting up/butterfly as I think it is now the weaker of the two.

lol yae the knee wrestling thing always got me. Now, i pull guard, unless the other guy just sits down in which case i stand or post on a knee an start trying to pass.

With 'knee wrestling' if we both get grips, i wait till they pull and either pull them the other way if i wana b on top, or i jus let them fall and pull half guard on the very miniscule way down lol.

pulling guard ftw :)

Here's a quick what NOT to do:
Do NOT try to blast double leg them onto their back, you might accidentally hurt their knees.

There are actually a couple of techniques you can use to put the guy on his backwhen you start on your knees, they're not special throws or takedowns or anything, but I've used them since day 1 of training.

Grab the same side collar, other hand grab the same side knee. You can either turn them like a wheel, pulling the collar down and pulling the knee up. Or you can go the very opposite direction and scissor your arms making him fall the other way. They both actually work very well. But someone usually pulls guard first...

Congrats on the thousand posts. I can't wait to get enough to finally see video on this damned site.

If the guy is bigger or stronger than me I usually pull guard, if I'm stronger I usually try to get a hold of his collar or behind his neck to pull them towards me get my shoulders over there's and rotate to take the back.

This is what I mostly do - I push them ONCE, if they fall back into their guard then so be it, otherwise I pull guard.
