I have been watching this sport for about two years, paying attention seriously for about the past year and this question has always been on my mind, how do you define a hardcore MMA fan? I personally don't define myself as one because I haven't been watching for long enough imo. Thoughts?

It's a combination of devotion to the sport (watching mass amounts of fights, learning the history, closely following current happenings) and appreciation of all facets of the sport (don't think as many fights are boring). That's my opinion. I don't think there's a time qualification, though you're naturally going to need some time to acclimate yourself with the requisite knowledge, but I think 1-2 years is definitely enough time to transfer yourself into a hardcore fan. I feel I did that back in 2005-2007. I feel like I went from "TUF noob" to looking up Shooto/SuperBrawl/KOTC fights on the internet.

My interest in the sport has waned a bit, but I still consider myself a hardcore fan because my understanding of the sport and my opinions/perceptions are formed on a more advanced level.

Different people are likely to have different definitions, but if you're following MMA outside of the UFC and Bellator and you're making an effort to soak up as much knowledge as you can, I think you can call yourself a hardcore fan.

Dont think it has anything to do with the amount of time you've been a fan but I agree with part of what Hardwood is saying.

Its about learning the history and watching all levels of mma, atleast thats what I think it is.

I consider myself a hardcore fan cause i love the sport, I go to events of all levels, I'm watching UFC on a Wed, Bellator on a friday, I'm watching AXS TV events like Legacy on Friday nights or going to Ring of COmbat shows.

If you watch two or more promotions regularly you are a hardcore mma fan.

If you watch Bellator, XFC, Invicta, then you're a hardcore fan.

If you view as much MMA as hardcore porn, then you are a hardcore fan

Going to sleep and setting an alarm for 3h later to watch it live.
Masochism.

What if it's softcore porn?

Than you should be asking yourself why are you watching so much softcore porn..

I can an understand an appreciation for the nuanced, romanticism of softcore.. But to me it's kinda like boxing vs mma..mma is hardcore

You have to watch every single UFC fight for 2 straight years. You can not consider it acceptable to miss a prelim.

Once I left the party because there was a fight on early prelims I was interested in.
Then I went back partying for about 1h more till the main card :icon_lol:

If you stay up until 7am watching grainy streams of fights, fueled only by caffeine and the love of combat, you're pretty hardcore.

and then when main event absolutely delivers, and adrenaline kicks in ... no sleep:)

You gotta be really elitist aswell. And if you see somebody refer to MMA as UFC make a thread on sherdog about it, then you'll be a true fan.
