What Defines A Good Striker? (KOing Other Strikers or Outstriking them?)

I come from more of a Jiu Jitsu background, but I HAVE fought a few Muay Thai matches, so I know a little bit...

I think a great striker in MMA can make a Wrestler or Judo player discouraged/afraid to take him down or clinch with him with TDD, elbows, and knees. Takedown skills wouldn't hurt, either. A great MMA striker must also set up COLLISIONS to KO these top notch guys. You can't paddycake with them and expect a KO. You have to get them to come at you as you are throwing your strikes (hopefully in bunches). That's the essence of great MMA striking, imho. Also timing, footwork, and (most of all) superior conditioning are major factors, as well.

I think Carlos Condit is the best striker in the UFC right now. He beat my boy Nick down. Collisions. Real shit.

I think being an effective striker has much more to do with it than being a good striker, atleast in mma.

Same with with wrestling in MMA. You can have all the credentials in the world under your belt, but if it doesn't effectively adapt to mma, its not worth much.

I totally agree. It's all about making your tools work for YOU in MMA. It's not as much centered around the purity of technique found in dedicated practitioners of traditional martial arts. Aldo is wild as hell, but he lays mutherfuckers out in MMA fights. All day every day. He'd get wasted in a traditional Muay Thai match if he fought like that against a legit Thai Boxer. I'm just calling it like I see it.

Condit over Anderson? Not hatin', just genuinely curious.
That kick he landed on gsp was sick for sure, though.

Winning with KO's, not by decision.

Decisions can be won by dancing around and avoiding a fight ala Condit, Cruz, Mighty Mouse, etc. That's good dancing, not striking.

Good striking is Anderson Silva, Jose Aldo, JDS, Cain, etc.

Anderson isn't as technical as Condit, Kampmann, or Stout (who I think are the best in the UFC, as far as pure Muay Thai technique goes.) Anderson has the best timing, footwork, and killer instinct. Carlos is EXTREMELY technical and doesn't lag too far behind in overall aggression, timing, and speed. I'd edge Carlos in the standup game if they were the same size. He'd be all over Anderson like white on rice. He would not be afraid to fight him and he wouldn't let Anderson grab him and knee him in the face.

So Dominic Cruz is a bad striker?

add Barboza to that list, also.

Fair enough call really. It's not only offense but defense as well, being able to avoid and land I think. But if you're a striker and you win all your fights (like Anderson), well that's the best way to prove your ability.

Oh you're the guy who said turtling should count as a submission loss... Yeah I and clearly Michael Bisping is an inferior striker to Alan Belcher.
