I've got a job opportunity out there and I don't know much about the area. I used to live in the bay area in Norcal but I don't know much about the LA area. The pay range says $19-$25 /hour and that sounds pretty low to me. What's the cost of living like out there? What's the crime like? Is it a shithole? Somebody school me on Torrance please

Torrance is not bad, and you can find a decent apartment for 1.2k within a few miles. There are some pretty nice areas as you get closer to palos verdes and the coast of the south bay. If you can get the 25 I'd do it. I just checked craigslist and there aren't any 1k apartments within torrance proper. The whole area is gentrifying (a good thing in my opinion). You might have to rent in lawndale, hawthorne, wilmington etc.

Torrance is a lot closer to LA than I am, so if you want 7$ avocado toast, and hipster chicks the world is your oyster. There is also swimming in the la brea tar pits, and museums.

Lot's of beaner chicks.....they still believe.

Even when I was fresh out of college, no way I'd up and move across state for 20 dollars an hour

Do all the cops that work in LA still live in Torrance?
Back in the days it was a cop town and they didnt like certain types to enter their city limits
That scene in Straight Outta Compton where the blacks get harassed for standing outside a music studio takes place in Torrance

@ToxicShocker molests homeless gentlemen out there so be wary of his advice. Ottherwise, just go for it, and can always join the bumfight circuit if it doesn’t work out.

I wouldn't even get out of bed for that money let alone move.

I think Torrance is where Dirk Diggler lived before he went Dirk Diggler?

If I take the job I'd probably end up getting the $25/hr. I'm just wondering if that's enough to live comfortably out there.

I can make $30+ an hour in shittier parts of the country. And that's more than enough to live comfortably in those states. But I'm tired of living in shitty parts of the country. lol I miss Cali.

Thats not a lot of pay for socal. You won't be swimming in anything and would be just getting by. If you are comfortable now, stick with it. Unless this job has a future for advancement to a high paying job.

I will right up a detailed report. Dont believe the others. I have lived here for 30 years.

Short summary: Good place to live.

Outside of a place I volunteer last night, which is across the street from a target. Homeless man in a long shirt has no pants, and no underwear on. I asked him "Dude, wheres your pants" He responds something about "their gone!" It's pretty obvious he's on meth. I tell him "If you wait behind that dumpster for 10 minutes I'll go buy you a pack of underwear."

"I don't want underwear, I want MMMMUUUUUNNNNNEEEEEYYYY" all drawn out like that. I laughed hard in his face and walked away.

Dude went past rock bottom and never looked back.
Nothing like seeing a dirty wrinkled dick to start your day

First of all, you will not be able to live off $20 an hr by yourself. The average apt around here is $14-1600 for a 1 bedroom. I was just looking yesterday.

The area is pretty cool. The schools are really good, we are not lausd. Cops are dicks this is true. Stay out of hawthorne and inglewood for housing.

Anything west of the 110 and south of the 405 is mostly acceptable to live in. Certain areas are still sketchy. Not a whole lot of gang crime but petty crimes still happen.

Beach is close and the city is 40% asian, it used to be the hq of toyota. Certain areas are very industrial. Nightlife around here and long beach is awesome.

This isnt fuckhead LA where everyones a fucking hipster vegan. Some of the beach cities can be snobbish but locals run the piers. The southbay has a very different feel than the rest of LA.

Its a pretty great place but its expensive, where is the offer to work at?

True story, A friend of a friends dad was a captain on the TPD. He was drinking one night and explaining to us about the codes they use. They had a non dept code for "black man in torrance that didnt belong" like 1216 or something and all officers in the area were to respond.

The thing about torrance is is a segregation city. It seperates all of the more ghetto cities from the beach cities and acts as a filter for crime. Thats why they were so tough and racist. I have had a few guns pulled on me with interactions with the TPD, even as young as the age of 12.

Depends on where you are in your life and what your goals are, including financial goals. Also are there any positives of working there in regards to your career? Even if you made $25/hr that is not much for the area unless you can get super cheap rent (like a room for $500/month) and the benefits are extremely good.

If you have a nice nest egg, no debt, the job is a great opportunity that could potentially further your career or has potential advancement and want to experience the so-call life then go for it. However don't expect you can be agressive with retirement investments and have a lot of play money on that type of wage in that location. Since you've lived in the Bay Area on a positive note it's more affordable then the Bay.

Awesome, I appreciate all the info, man. The job is at some place called Robinson Helicopter. I'd be doing avionics work.

And yeah I was afraid that pay would be pretty low compared to the cost of living in the area. I wanna go back to cali but I don't wanna be poor when I get there. I haven't made up my mind yet but you're helping me to do that bro, so I might actually hit you up with more questions later. Once again, I do appreciate all the info

Its a nice area, especially toward Palos verdes and Redondo, it will cost a lot in rent, so you would have to live in a neighboring city and just commute to safe money. I think the Gracie academy is there, the part next to Carson, Gardena (gardena has a lot of Japanese) and lomita is the ghetto side though, but the ones near Palos Verdes and the beach are nice

Robinson Helicopter is a legit place to work. I have had a few friends work there. I would have thought they would pay more. You'd be at the torrance airport which is right by my house. There are soo many mma gyms in torrance too. Real gracie accademy, anderson silvas gym, lyotos gym etc...The guy above me is a little more uptight about the areas, IMO hes being a bit dramatic. Nothings ghetto until the 110 and 405 like I mentioned. Stay away from the habor ucla hospital area tho. There are a lot of avionics opportunities at the hawthore airport i would imagine that is much bigger than torrances.

Hermosa beach has a gang of hot bitches but I ran through that in my early 20's. Its funny, I keep planning to move to OC but i just cant leave this place.

I'm used to making a lot more but it's usually as a contractor. You make more as a contractor and get a lot of tax free pay but you don't get benefits. Robinson is offering benefits and a permanent slot. But like I said, I don't wanna be poor when I get there. I'm still mulling it over. I might do it.
