i don't keep up with what is happening in the tech-world so i'm unsure what is out there.
are there things that can replace having a pc in your home? can a laptop adequately replace one?
    what about an ipad?
or are there compromises you have to make with a laptop or ipad?

I dont keep up anymore but you can get unbelievable laptops so that's not going to limit you. If you're just using it for browsing and streaming than I am pretty sure iPads work well. Most of my family seems to be getting one, although I don't see the appeal since they already have smartphones.

Nothing can replace the PC, you are forever confined to your desk.

    Sorry bud.

In Mayberry, the only thing an iPad replaces is you, buddy.

Choosing the right computer depends on what you plan to use it for. If you don't know that, then get an iPhone.

A laptop is a PC. It's just a very weak, limited PC. Yes, there are sacrifices that you make with a laptop versus most standard desktops, especially customized rigs, and there are a great many more sacrifices with a tablet like an iPad, but ultimately, it depends on what you're doing with it. Many don't use their desktop for anything that they can't do with a laptop today. Still, most would use their PC/laptop for a number of things that a tablet couldn't do (with exception to the Surface Pro series).

Most people are content with laptops these days while PCs are more catered to people that need/want a lot of power or gamers.

I consider tablets and phones complimentary devices to PCs/laptops. They COULD replace a PC if all you do is browse the web and check e-mail but they are too cumbersome to use for other tasks.

Sounds like OP would be happy with a hybrid tablet/laptop unless they play games.

If you want to game I'd recommend a decent performing pc, otherwise a laptop would be fine. Tablets are great but you'd need a laptop or pc as well

Unless you're doing work that's very computationally intensive, laptops are more than sufficient. I have a powerful work desktop and a very good but very portable work laptop ("ultrabook"). The later would probably melt if I tried to run certain simulations and analyses I use the former for but is great for traveling and still powerful enough for most straightforward analyses and outperforms most desktops older than two years.

Hey Mick if I virtualize my existing laptops onto external hard drive can I then start them up from the surface pro via usb 3 with success? Basically using the surface pro as a "dumb" terminal. Most of my work is via RDP to remote servers and running VMs of my current laptops would save me carrying them or leaving them switched on. I googled this a while back and couldnt find a solid answer. Thanks

Laptops have come a long way. I got a gaming laptop in 2011 and it can still run most any game I want to play on full HD resolution, high graphics settings and 50+ frames per second with its Nvidia 570M card. Now the laptops available at this price point are significantly better... with the new 900M series cards out and the Haswell CPU.

I like to check out what is available every so often in laptops. Living abroad, it is definitely worth it to have a laptop rather than a desktop and also great when the power goes out (happened a lot in October for me this year). Check out xoticpc for what is available in high-end MSI laptops.

Desktop pcs will always be the most powerful and most useful. Most people, however, don't use most of their pcs capabilities.

If you're a power user, PC is the only way to go. There are some decent laptops that are desktop replacements but they're usually very bulky.
