what belt level should I compete at?

Hi guys, I have been training off and on for a few years. I trained with a gi for a few months when I started then I had to quit for a while and when I resumed I started training no gi. I have been training strictly no gi and I don't train at any particular school, I just train with friends in the garage and from time to time I drop in to a school and just pay the mat fee to roll with the guys in the class. I am still a white belt since I have have never been promoted since I never trained consistently with an instructor.

I thinking about competing in a jiu jitsu tournament and I was wondering what level I would compete at. I don't want to compete with the whitebelts because I would be sandbagging. I dropped by a few schools and rolled with a gi to see where I am at. I beat every blue belt except one who caught me in a kimura. I rolled with a total of 4 purple belts. I was able to dominate one, one of them was about equal with me and 2 of them seemed a little better than me but they could not really control me or tap me out. I went with a brown belt an got my ass handed to me.
I would like to compete with the purple belts. Is that okay or do they make you compete with people of the same belt level? I don't want to put on a purple belt I did not earn so would it be okay to wear the white belt while competing against the higher belts?

I think this is probably a troll thread but:

If you're competing in gi, go whitebelt, you weren't awarded any other belt. If you're competing in No-gi, I'm pretty sure it goes by experience, not belt level.

Define "dominate". A lot of times when people say they dominated, it means they stayed on top and survived. In a tournament what matters is your offensive success. If you pass guard on these guys? Sweep from full/half/open guard? Submit?

For that matter, were these opponents at least your size? It makes a big difference. Were they going 100%? These are all factors.

If you've never competed before, and have never been awarded a rank, or even trained under a proper instructor, then enter as a white belt. If you dominate as much as you expect, then you know what to do next.

if it's gi division, compete as a white belt, it is not sandbagging.

In gi, you would compete at white belt, because you are a white belt.

You dominate purples, so I would get in the brown belt division at a minimum. Probably black.

Compete as a white belt because that is what you are, although you a probationary one stripe, which means your basically a two strip, which is probationary.... etc

You should definitely do the black belt division even though you're a white belt.
