Werdum bets on Ngannou KO over Miocic, welcomes bout against winner in April

Former UFC heavyweight champion, Fabricio Werdum, will be watching closely as Stipe Miocic will try to defend the belt against rising star Francis Ngannou, in January at UFC 220. That is, of course, because Werdum is very interested in fighting the winner, who he believes will be Ngannou, as he told Portal do Vale Tudo.

“Ngannou has a lot of power, but I don’t think he’s very technical. However, I still believe he’ll surprise Miocic and knock him out. They both enjoy trading shots, so if Miocic doesn’t have the right strategy, that big black guy will knock him out. Ngannou is very confident and that can make a difference, if he really connects, you’re going down, as we saw with Overeem.”

“I can already see myself submitting him, though, and becoming champion again. That’s my goal, to have a third belt on my wall and I really do believe it’ll happen. I’m sure I’m next. I’ll be waiting for him in April or so.”

Werdum is too fast for Ngannou, who will quickly slow down because of his terrible gas tank. Then Doom will pick him apart.

TKO/Sub Rnd 3/4.

(Ng has zero experience in a 3rd round. He'd be a joke in a 5th, esp. after gaining weight.)

HW anything could happen but my money on Stipe due to experience

Ngannou grappling game so far, inside the 8 or at regional level, looked really awful, amateurish and desperate.

I know he probably made some improvements since he has been training with Vinny Magalhães (BJJ monster), but i'd say we can't really know the level he is at so we've to go by what we have seen: a guy with average TDD and who never fought a elite fighter with legit grappling.

Against the best BJJ ever of heavyweight division he could very well get submitted if he tried some sloppy shit on the ground, against Zoumara Cisse he tried to get back up with no technique, using just his strenght, and almost was finished. He was saved by the referee with a very strange and uneducated stand up in kimura position. Curtis Blaydes and Luis Henrique KLB were able to takedown him, Anthony Hamilton did. We haven't seen enough of his single/double leg takedown defense at all, Werdum could try that.

If MMA HW history tells something it's to never count Werdum off, people gave him almost no chance against Fedor and Cain and he made history. Don't fool yourselves again. This is heavyweight, at the end of the day. Pretty much anyone at top 10 can beat anyone.

Werdum has fought practically everyone and he's only been stopped once in the last 9 years. Ngannou will have his work cut out if he gets past Stipe.

It would depend on Werdums game plan imo. If he uses striking to set up grappling I could definitely see him getting a submission. If he tried to rely on his boxing he would get cracked.

Man this is on the level of mcgregor fan level of ignorance. Most people are voting for ngannou.

Let's see:
Werdum: arguably hw GOAT, great chin, better/ more diversified striking, better cardio, more creative, better clinch, better ground game. Goes 5 rounds no problem
Wins: Nog, Cain, fedor, hunt, Browne

Ngannou: has power but is somewhat reckless. Cardio seems to fade during the second round
Wins: very old and worn down overeem and arlovski

If Verdum is somehow to get Ngannou to the ground we could have another Walt Harris situation on our hands. Keep that in mind.

No one wants to see werdum-ngnnou

it will be worse than ubereem-werdum

I'd go with Werdum, he's known to perform well being the underdog.

And anyone with half half a brain can plan that he should respect and refrain from boxing against Ngannou. Ngannou has little grappling weaponry to skip Werdum, so as long as Werdum don't get overconfident like he did against Miocic he's good and sound against Francis.

That being said, we're all interested in Ngannou's future, let's hope he's not the next JDS.
