Well, I'm getting a new hip on Monday. No training for me for 4-6 months

I'm 35 years old and have severe Osteo-Arthritis in my right hip and have lost all range of motion due to a double impingment in my hip joint. I have bone on bone and live in constant pain. I've been trying to train with this in BJJ but it's been near impossible. I've seen many doctors and finally decided in a new procedure called Hip Resurfacing. Instead of cutting the femor and putting in a mechanical unit they shave the ball down and cap it with a medal capsile and put a metal cup on the inside of your pelvis. This new surface because the artificial hip and has a great success rate since it's been invented 16 years ago. The process has been in the U.S. for 6 years now and has seen great results.

I go in on Monday morning to have the procedure done and I'm certainly nervous. The recovery will be anywhere from 4-12+ months. Everyone says I will feel great in about 2-4 weeks and at weeks 8-10 will feel like a million bucks. The issue is that your natural bone needs to grow and fuse to the implant and that takes from 4-12 months. Once everything is sold you can resume almost all activity including Martial Arts and esp. BJJ.

The recovery will be tough for sure but at the end of the day when I'm better than new things will be great. Because of all the pain and lack of motion the only real game I can play right now is 1/2 guard from bottom. Most everything else is just too painful or impossible because of my negative rotation in my hip. I will most likely need my left hip done but am hoping I have a few years before I go that route.

Jesus, I am sorry to hear this, sounds absolutely horrible. Best of luck, I really hope this works out as great as it sounds like it could.

When you get back to it you'll be happy and you'll probably improve at a quicker rate because you won't have to favor your hip anymore

It'll feel great in the long run.

One thing you should be concerned about is your cardio/gaining weight. I had a labral tear in my hip, had surgery for that and had to mostly sit around for 3 months. It made me lose motivation for staying shape and the habit continued beyond those months.

You should think about looking around and seeing if a nearby gym has a machine a la Endless Rope Machine | Rope Climbing Machine

They have seated versions, set the resistance correctly and you can get your heart rate going pretty well.

Do whatever you can to stay active.

I totally hear ya. I'm going to be dieting hard after the 2 week period post surgery. This will minimize the amount of weight I gain. I have gained some weight over the past few months because I really haven't been able to do any cardio because I can't run or anything. Once I'm cleared to start swimming I will be hitting the pool to keep active. I was already told I can go back to weight training 2 weeks post surgery so long as I go light and don't do anything that puts stress on my hip.

It will be awesome when I'm recovered and I have the strength and range of motion in my hip. I'm nervous as hell but I know I'm doing the right thing. The pain has gotten so bad that I can't even sleep at night. I'm looking forward to being pain free.

Did you have arthroscopy to fix the labrem tear?

Good luck, bro. Sounds like you have a good attitude about it.

I'm sorry to hear about this and hope everything goes well for you. I know a black belt who is rather young (under 30) who I've heard already needs a similar surgery. Good luck and hope the pain goes away.

I wouldn't stress the diet too much. Take it easy, eat some ice cream, drink a couple of beers--it'll all come off when you start swimming and getting more active again. You won't be down for long, I'm sure. Good luck with your surgery and rehab.

Dang that is rough. Don't get down though. You can rehab, and if you do it right, you can still be healthy and maybe even still be able to grapple.

Good luck, hopefully your recover is trouble free.

I did. The surgery itself was not a big deal, 2 little holes. It only hurt for a couple few weeks. The inactivity came from them telling me if I didn't lay off it a few months I had a good chance of re-injury.

The pre-surgery pain could best be described as walking around always feeling like you just got kicked lightly in a testicle.

I'm sorry to hear you have to go through this, but thank God you have a solution.

Sounds fairly

All the best for your recovery and training afterwards!

Yeah but think how much better you will be with three hips.

Thanks everyone for the support. I go in tomorow morning and I'm def. nervous. I wish I could just fast forward my life 1 month. The good thing is that I know the time will go by quickly and this will all be a distant memory. I'm trying to stay positive and proactive so I can have the quickest possible recovery. I saw someone online in another forum that had this surgery 12 days ago and is already walking 2+ miles per day. That def. give me encouragement.

If you're looking for encouragement, watch 'Braulio Estima: Road to ADCC part 4'. There is a clip of him actually damaging his spine, and for something like 10 minutes he's paralyzed. Anyway, he wasn't even sure whether he would be able to walk properly again, and look where he's @ now. If he can do it, so can you.

It's only a minor setback in your goals, just stay positive and I'm sure everything will go smoothly.
