I am 20 y/o, 6f4 and about 185lbs. I am starting to go to the gym pretty hard but I think that my diet is letting me down. Eating a shit load of oatmeal (with fruit and yougurt) in the morning, then mostly rice dishes with tuna/chicken/pork with stir fried vegetables. I try to have at least 4 meals (and a post workout whey protien shake) apart from breakfast but seem to get (slightly) bigger and stronger without putting on any weight. I guess what I want to know is other cost-efficient foods to get the desired outcome that I am looking for....

I friend of mine told me to just increase your calories whatever way you can. And since I am skinny and healthy he said that I dont really need to worry about fats. Is this true (within reason)?

If so, then what foods could I eat?

I wouldn't say "you don't really need to worry about fats." There is that thing about cardiovascular health.

Having said that, you won't gain significant weight without putting SOME junk in your system. Just be careful what junk. You're already supplementing protein. I'd look for a total increase in calories of about 500 per day (without changing anything else) and see how that does after a month. If that's not enough, try another 500. If that's too much, back off 250. Etc. Et al. Ad nauseum.

Eggs, Milk, Cottage cheese, protein shakes are all easy alternatives. It looks like you're eating sensibly already, you just need to increase the quantity and frequency of your meals.

When I'm trying to gain weight I make it a point to get some calories every 2 hours. Heck, some skinnier guys get up in the middle of the night to down a shake.

I have never tried to count my calories, so I guess that would be a logical first step. I like foods that are quick to cook, and I think that eggs will be something easy to work into my diet.

Thanks for the input guys..

Hardboiled eggs are an easy portable source of protein. But really, liquid calories are the easiest way to add extra calories to your diet. Stock up on whey and use it multiple times per day. I know fat_wilhelm mixes 4-5 servings of whey all at once and sips it throughout the day.

yeh im a big fan of the hard boiled eggs aswell there easy take with you wherever your going.also if you desperately want some calories drink those liquid breakfast things in between meals

I've taken up drinking a protein shake first and last thing in the day, both with milk. Whey Protein is a cheap alternative to food, initially it may seem crazy paying $100+ for a tub of powder, but when you translate that to calories+protein per shake as opposed to how much $$ you'd pay for that in food, it's pretty reasonable.
Also, you should never be hungry :)

agreed. whey isnt as good as whole food, but its cheap, easy, and added to milk makes a good liquid meal high in protein.

I started lifting seriously again at about you weight and height, and last time I weighed myself I was about 200lbs, so you can def make some good gains if you work hard at the gym! im sure you have read it, but the FAQ here has some solid advice as to getting your training down.

Would that break down the effectiveness of the protein over the course of the day? I have no idea on that one, I just know that a lot of "just add liquid" stuff is better consumed immediately.

I'd actually suggest drinking whey/casein blends instead of just whey if you're gonna drink shakes outside of Pre/Peri/Post Workout.

when I started lifting I was eating too little, I think I tried too hard to eat clean and low carb but I started to lose weight more than I was gaining..

anyways, Im eating like a horse right now to see If its really my diet thats lacking, I think I ate 9 times yesterday.I spent all my money on groceries, I bought a few whole chickens @ 10$ a peice, gonna cook them and feed on those through the week.

I don't get it. Your BMI is very healthy. You are also only 20 years old, your metabolism is just about to slow down. Don't worry about looks, I'm sure you look great. It's about being healthy right? Looking good on the outside doesn't mean you look good on the inside. Even skinny people have heart attacks and high cholesterol. So, yeah, eat healthy. You sound good. Going to the gym and eating decent is great.

Oh, if you DO stay "really skinny", take up Muay Thai ;-D

Good points, but if he wants to bulk up, he needs to hit that massive calorie hurdle that so commonly challenges Ectomorphs. Whilst eating healthy is the priority, cheat meals and such can help boost the calories :D

I doubt it. Berardi has recommend mixing your shake the night before to save time in the morning so if you mix some in the morning it should be fine if you manage to consume it throughout the day.

Agreed.

Cool, Berardi is pretty close to infallible. +1 on the mix blend of proteins for day long shake though.

I usually just recommend whey because it's so readily accessible.

The best part about whey-only is that it's so much cheaper. The stuff I normally buy lasts me forever for dirt cheap.

I doubt you're eating enough. Do yourself a favor and go buy "Scrawny to Brawny" It's loaded with information. Any idea what your body fat % is???
