After a slugfest in which you TKO the guy in a fight that was mainly stand up.

Just kinda thought that was pretty strange to see after a fight like that to earn a brown belt.

possibly a case of "Theres brown belts... and then theres brown belts Joe" ?

u missed the part where the bjj black belt had his back, with a bodylock (after Brown was kicked in his gut), and Brown survived and got out of it.

Might have something to do with the brown belt.

Awesome sub defense in the first, some nice sub attempts in the second.

Edit, yeah the pre-earned theory makes sense.

Someone didn't watch the first round?

not to mention doing great on the ground offensively, going for an armbar, locking in like 2 triangles or something, getting sweeps etc.

He'd probably already earned it, they just wanted to present it to him tonight on live television after a main event fight.

Also, what the previous poster said. He had a black belt on his back for 3+ minutes after getting hurt badly and survived. That's no joke.

I'm pretty sure you earn your belt by training in BJJ, not by fighting.

nailed it.

We all know Silva is a BJJ blackbelt. But you are not aware of that fact and watch the fight, You would think that Brown was the blackbelt. Surviving for 3+mins with a BJJ blackbelt on his back, transitioning from one sub to another, mand basically rag dolling Silva with trips several times nad he even gave up positions to get the sub. That may have earned him that Brown belt.

Browns sub defense was really impressive. I'd say that performance is worth his brown belt, seeing as Silva is a black belt.

Submission defense used to be a real problem for him, he clearly showed against Silva that not only is it no longer an issue but that he's capable of thoroughly outgrappling and manhandling a legitimate black belt after being put in a bad spot early.

You're right. He went for an armbar at one point, lost position and threw up a triangle quick as shit. Then went for a triangle armbar. Didn't he even try an inverted triangle at one point? And not jits, but those little judo trips or whatever he did were awesome too. Brown was on point tonight.

His coach probably cut him a deal. If he didn't get subbed he would get his brown belt, if he got subbed he would be demoted to blue belt.

Or maybe Brown earned his belt for years of practice but was given it after a great fight?

Submission defense does not equal a brown belt.
But like others have already said, he more than likely already earned it and they just waited to present him with it after a main event fight.
