Dana White targeting Chris Weidman vs. Vitor Belfort middleweight title fight ... in Brazil

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White wants Chris Weidman to defend his middleweight title against division number one contender Vitor Belfort; however, he won't do anything to undermine the authority of the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

That means "The Phenom" has to be cleared by the NSAC before White can play matchmaker, but if and when he does, expect the promotion to target a year-end title fight in ... Brazil. That's correct, Belfort will be cleared to compete in Las Vegas so that White can book him in Brazil.

From the UFC Dublin media scrum (watch it):

"We want to make that fight happen. That's the next fight. That fight should've already happened before the Machida. That's the fight we want to do and that's the fight that Chris Weidman wants. It doesn't have to take place in Nevada. That fight would be big in Brazil, too. I would do it Brazil. As long as the commission clears him, yeah. We'd want the okay from Nevada, and if Nevada was cool with it, I'd do it in Brazil."

Belfort was already cleared to compete by the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) back in May.

"The Phenom" must appear before the NSAC next Wednesday (July 23, 2014) to answer for a failed drug test earlier this year, his second in Nevada. While the first was for steroids back in 2006, the second was a result of testosterone, which helped lead to a statewide ban of TRT.

Subsequent tests also felled Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva.

White's decision to send Belfort back to Brazil is likely to raise a few eyebrows, since the Brazilian -- and his chemistry set -- was accused of hiding on his home turf during a torrid run through the division, which included three straight wins by way of violent knockout.

Expect this topic to be front and center by the middle of next week.

Thoughts?

Yeah because Vitor can't fight anywhere else.

What a joke. Weidman is the champion..why does he have to go to Brazil?

Everyone knows the real reason Dana is pushing for Vitor to fight in Brazil..he would never be able to pass a drug test in the States.

they should fight in neutral territory for this one. maybe 20 minutes drive from where Vitor was born would be ok.

As long as Vitor's cleared by the NSAC, I don't have a problem with it. That being said, it probably would be better to hold it in Vegas to avoid the inevitable shitstorm.

LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"We're all over drug testig, we're serious about cleaning up the sport."

"Weidman vs Vitor in Brazil!"

Fuck you Dana, biggest waste of human life ever.

Man I don't hate on Dana like everyone else on this sight.... But this is bullshit we all know he is gonna juice if he is allowed to fight in brazil. Is vitor really gonna do so many more pvp numbers that they're willing to do this? Plus what are the odds Vitor doesn't get at least a 6 month suspension.

Holy shit Vitor, knock it off with the goddamn steroids! Of course he's gonna fight in Brazil so he can have his camp in Brazil so the AC doesn't send anyone for random testing and he can stay hopped up on "supplements".

Would be nuts. The place would go fucking ballistic if Vitor won.

He trains in South Florida...

I believe a champ has the right to decide where the fight takes place and no champ should be forced to fight a challenger in his home country... but if Chris wants to fight vitor bad enough, and Brazil the only place that can happen.. then props to him.

I'm skeptical of how the comission is run in Brazil, but if Belfort gets cleared by Nevada then I'd assume he's going to be fighting 100% clean.

If Weidman is okay with it and someone not from the CABMMA or UFC is on Belfort's ass with the most comprehensive drug testing possible, I don't really care. I doubt it goes down that way.

It's just shitty that they would even try to go this way, though. Really says a lot about UFC.

I just want this fight in Vegas, think that's where it belongs.

I want Vitor to kick Weidman's head into the crowd but this isn't cool.. that said if CW has no problems with it (and I suspect he does not) and the NSAC clear Vitor lets make it happen.. Weidman by r3 sub.

IF this story turns out to be true Dana White is the biggest tool imaginable if he sets this up in Brazil. They say it's for ratings but the ONLY thing stopping Dana from outright booking this in Brazil is the fact that Vitor NEEDS the NSAC to clear him to fight and approve his license. But here is where it gets tricky, technically Dana can schedule the match and Vitor can meet Weidman because even though state commissions will NOT generally cross one another and license a fighter that has ongoing problems such as Vitor does in Nevada it MAY not stop the Brazil commission from licensing Vitor.

Another tricky part is immediately AFTER TRT was banned by the NSAC in Nevada the Brazil commission followed suit shortly thereafter so IF Nevada decides not to license Vitor there isn't ANYTHING Dana could do to schedule the fight unless the Brazil commission clears Vitor and licenses him which I seriously doubt they will. I believe this is a white wash and this bullshit will blow over because until Vitor is scheduled for a NSAC meeting or a hearing he isn't getting licensed in the states at all.

Even though he could technically fight in other countries like Japan I don't believe that Dana and company will do an end run around NSAC policies so this announcement really has NO weight to it at all. I may be slightly incorrect about into commission policies and politics but I seriously doubt Dana would want anyone from the NSAC angry that he scheduled a fight for Vitor in Brazil because NO matter what Vitor still needs to answer for his positive test in February.
