Saw the wcl for the first time last week; was curious if you guys knew or were aware of the caliber or background of the fighters.

being that this is the standup forum, what are your thoughts on the event as a whole; the fight quality and the overall production

thanks in adv

I like it. But then I'm biased (as a karate type guy).

I think it is pretty entertaining. You also see some guys from backgrounds that are not commonly seen in these types of events. Lots of karate point-fighters and there was an olympic TKD silver medalist.

One of the things that is interesting to see is the mistakes some of the guys make and they are what you'd expect. The olympic tkd silver medalist guy got knocked out with an overhand right after throwing tons of crazy kicks. Similarly there was a karate point fighter (much like ITF TKD) that was doing amazing until he got knocked out with a superman punch.

BUT, but...here is where it gets interesting.

You see the guys who come from these backgrounds after a couple of fights and they have adjusted their game accordingly. These are GOOD competitive athletes. So in the same line up I remember there was this guy from a karate point fighting background going toe to toe with a guy with a strong boxing background. It was an exciting round.

Finally you get the knee jerk reaction of the zealous MMA fanbase mocking these guys. I remember everyone in a sherdog thread ridiculing the WCL when it first came out. Buried in there, however, was a post from a guy who's son took classes from one of the competitors. He mentioned that this instructor was both was a BJJ blackbelt and the son-in-law of one of the Machados. He basically said that all the posters who said, "I'd GnP all these wimps" were sadly mistaken. Like most intelligent posts in the main forum, however, this little gem was lost to the masses.

So my thought is that these guys are no joke. Hard work going at the pace they are expected to go at.

WCL is still young. im sure the quality of fighters will improve as time goes on. and the rules might change as well. can someone verify there is no leg kicks, and can fighters knee to the face? there isn't any mentioning of no leg kicks on WCL's website, and as far as kneeing goes, it just says front and roundhouse.

I'm not sure on knees, but I know that for a leg kick to be legal it must be followed by another strike.

As was mentioned earlier, these guys are all good athletes, given some time I think we'll see some real superstars appear. But for now people are still adjusting.

There's a couple guys in there already who are decent fighters. Pete Spratt is in there now.

i think they should add knees but like KK rules or k-1 rules. Either no clinching and kneeing or only one knee after a clinch and you have to release.

Something screams to me that this is like that "Real Pro Wrestling" show that was on Fox sports a few years ago where they had amateur style wrestling matches. Only lasted a couple months if that. I haven't watched this show yet, as I don't get versus. Is the production kinda cheesy or does it look like it may be decent? Also there is a fighter on the Houston team from one of the schools in Omaha who trains with Houston Alexander. Bryan "the surgeon" Corley. Not that it matters, it's just nice to see people from Omaha puttin it on the map in terms of fighting.
