The World Boxing Council is investigating former world champion Shane Mosley after reports his testimony to a BALCO grand jury includes a doping admission, the New York Daily News reported on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old American's sworn testimony in the BALCO steroid scandal, recently opened to public scrutiny by court officials, included confessing that he took performance-enhancing drugs before a 2003 fight with Oscar de la Hoya.

"It was a real surprise to read that Mosley has confessed that he did take those medicines, those drugs that are totally prohibited by the WBC," WBC president Jose Sulaiman told the newspaper.

"WBC rules state that we must have a hearing. This is a matter of serious concern to us."

Mosley, 45-5 with 38 knockouts, is set to fight Mexico's Antonio Margarito, the World Boxing Association welterweight champion who is 37-5 with 27 knockouts, next month at Las Vegas.

Mosley, who most recently knocked out Nicaraguan Ricardo Mayorga in the 12th round in September, won a unanimous decision over de la Hoya in 2003 for the WBA and WBC light middleweight crown, winning 115-113 on each judge's card.

Mosley then told a BALCO grand jury later that year he used steroids and EPO in training.

While he normally could expect grand jury testimony to remain private and would face perjury charges if caught lying, Mosley was undone after so much of the testimony was revealed by newspapers over the past few years, including Mosley's admission by the News.

US baseball all-time home run king Barry Bonds and athletics stars Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery are among the sports stars whose glory was tarnished by links to BALCO.

Mosley has insisted he did not know the drugs he took were illegal, a similar case to that made by Bonds, who is scheduled to stand trial on perjury and obstruction of justice charges in March.

Sulaiman has asked WBC lawyers to gather evidence in the matter and present details of his investigation to WBC officials, who could disqualify or fine Mosley even this long after the bout.

"Thus far, the WBC has seen only press reports and must therefore investigate any available evidence and review it, in terms of the WBC rules and regulations' anti-doping provisions," said WBC legal counsel Robert Lenhardt.

Mosley has filed a defamation lawsuit against BALCO founder Victor Conte, who has told newspapers he watched Mosley knowingly inject himself with EPO. A hearing in the case is set for January.

Conte, who has transcripts of the BALCO testimony, told the News that he is "more than willing to cooperate with any investigation of Shane Mosley's use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Epo and oids. wow. Lets face it a lot of guys at the top have their ways to beat testing.

LOL @ The WBC crying foul over someone else's cheating.

It all means nothing at this stage of his career. It probably doesn't mean that much to DLH anymore as Mosley's now one of his employees. I still think DLH won that fight against Mosley.

People should stop paying the sanctioning fees and start dropping the WBC belts. WBC is the worst of all the top 4-5 ABC organizations.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Very true and probably the most crooked too. I think the idea of the WBC belt holding the most prestige is gone now.

EDIT - Just an example is that after DLH lost to Mosley in the 2nd fight, he fought Sturm and Hopkins, won 1, lost 1, really lost them both and came back as the no1 contender after 18 months off to fight Mayorga for the strap. That's why I don't like the WBC, politics and bullshit.

Jose Sulaiman is going to set things STRAIGHT and SQUARE!!!

I think this man has single-handedly done so much damage to the sport of boxing.

.

I should probably change the title of this thread to 'The Official Jose Sulaiman Hate Thread' the way it's going! :icon_chee

I like the IBO title and it's well becoming the title of choice. NO STUPID MANDATORY!

Luckily for boxing fans, we have the good people of the WBC to look out for us.

I like the IBO title and it's well becoming the title of choice. NO STUPID MANDATORY!

Fighters deserve to fight for titles in their division if they earn the spot. Otherwise there is no champion.

Why is WBC the worst? who would you guys say is the best? (in regards to most prestige, honesty, etc.)

HAH HAH HAH !!!

Honesty.

Pal, you're breaking me up, made me have a good belly-laugh.
Good for the soul, good for the soul.

Why is WBC the worst? .)

Jose Soulamain... however its spelled, open scoring, planted judges, Champions emeritus, overturned decisions, sanctioning fees that mean absolutely nothing, making Andre Berto champion of the WW division by beating, rankings for sale, miki rodriguez....

Oleg and Peter fighting to unify the WBC's own titles, interim vs. super champion. What a fucking joke!

Jose Sulaiman. WBC.

- elimination of 15 rd fights in favour of 12 rds.

- the change from SAME-DAY weigh-ins to DAY-BEFORE weigh-ins. (18 lbs over the limit on fight night nowadays !)

- the creation of all these super and junior intermediate weight classes (From 8 classes to 17!)

- implementation of Standing 8 Count.
This is when a guy is hit a good shot during an exchange, there's no knockdown, and the ref breaks up the action to give one guy a "Standing 8 Count".
It steals potential victory away from the other guy who's been trying to get his opponent in trouble all night long. When the opportunity for a finish comes where another punch might bring either a knockdown or a knockout, the ref breaks the action to give a "Standing 8 Count", and the opportunity for a knockdown or knockout is taken away. Knocking down the other man is the goal of Boxing.

- Jose Sulaiman also bears blame for the creation of the Cruiserweight division because he thought the perfect-sized fighting men (185 to 220 lb heavyweights) could not compete with modern huge 245+ lb Heavyweights. Rubbish.

Damn his eyes.

jose sulaiman investingating someone for cheating is like r kelly investigating michael jackson for child molesting.

Conte billed Mosley for 'cream' and the 'clear', report

Thu 25 Dec, 12:23 AM

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Victor Conte says boxer Shane Mosley would arrive by limousine for visits to his office where Conte provided him with steroids, USA Today newspaper reported Wednesday.

Conte, whose BALCO laboratories sparked stunning scandals in athletics and baseball, alleges in court papers filed Tuesday that he charged Mosley 900 dollars for blood-boosting drug EPO and 600 dollars for the steroids known as "the cream" and "the clear."

Conte says he also billed Mosley 200 dollars for the limousine Mosley used to get around in. He also charged him 150 dollars for blood work before Mosley's 2003 title fight against Oscar De La Hoya.

Conte says Mosley paid him 500 dollars in cash and 1,350 dollars by personal check.

Conte is trying to have a defamation suit filed by Mosley against him dismissed. The suit claims Conte told newspapers he watched Mosley inject himself with endurance-boosting EPO and that the boxer knew what he was taking.

Question, the IBF, WBO, and other companies have the same rules no (minus the standing 8 count)
