Was Tyson as good as people think?

His defense was never the same after Cus died and he stopped working with Rooney.

As I said, Cus' death has nothing to do with anything since Cus never taught Mike anything. He built him mentally. Rooney was the one who held mitts in the gym and gave instructions in the corner.

This is just ridiculous. Cus was the head trainer and took Mike in when he was a kid. The peek a boo style is all Cus. Cus trained Mike from age 12-18.

Cus died the same year Tyson turned pro, 1985, and Rooney took over as Mike's trainer.

Tyson came from an era of amazing athletes. Just look at how fast the middle-aged guy throwing jabs with the pads in the fist video is. World class jab speed. And in the second video the guy bobbing his head in the corner has world class head movement.

Either that or you're buying into a bunch of obviously sped up tape.

You don't know who those guys are? SMH

Mental is a huge part of the fight game.

Why don't any of you man up and admit you were wrong to think Cus' death had anything to do with Mike's decline? Mike himself has explicitly said Cus never taught him any technique. He just talked to him for hours every night about boxing history and life in general.

Cus trained Rooney and Rooney trained Mike. It's as simple as that. Cus didn't even watch Mike fight, let alone corner him. He sat at home waiting for the phone call to know the result.

So, guess what happeneded when Cus d'Amato died in 1985? Nothing. Mike kept getting better and better until he fired Rooney. Yes, 1988 Tyson was BETTER than 1985 Tyson whether you like it or not so stop saying Mike's decline began in 1985 because it's just not true.

Cus was there as a father figure....he also covered up alot of Mike's earlier fuck ups.
Read the book "Fire and Fear" by Chegui Torres...it's pretty good.

As far as his place in history...top ten for sure....probably 7-8.

No, his movement was all an illusion

And yeah Cus was a father figure but he most certainly trained Mike early on. Need to watch some old Castkill gym footage when Mike was 16. Steve Lott posts a lot of cool stuff. Cus was always outside the ropes instructing Mike during sparring. Kevin and Teddy both did a lot for Tyson too, especially Rooney.

And I think his chin is underrated. Kinda heartbreaking to watch him clutch for his mouthpiece after Buster unloaded bombs on him. That shit would have put most fighters through the ropes.

Bo Jackson, Herschel Walker , Lebron James .

Lebron James does not come close to Tyson. If you want to make a thread questioning how good someone actually is, it should be Lebron, not Tyson. Tyson was shockingly, disturbingly good.

For me, hes up there. Like most everyone else has already said. His earlier fights , the movement, speed and combinations were different class. He only made everyone else look like 'bums'.

A once in a lifetime talent.

Casuals usually overrate him and many hardcore fans underrate him

How do you guys think 1996 Mike Tyson vs. 2015 Wladimir Klitschko plays out?

How do you guys think 1996 Mike Tyson vs. 2015 Wladimir Klitschko plays out?

A prime Tyson beats Wlad in his early days when he was not as experienced and sharp. A prime Tyson's chance of beating 2015. Wlad is about zero to nothing :). Tyson never stood a real chance against tall and skilled opponents who were not afraid of him. Amazing and spectacular style, but as soon as he got tested by someone who wasn't afraid of him, he went down.

During his brief reign as champion, he was the most dominant champion I ever saw. He was blowing out everyone. Spinks vs Tyson was hyped up as a battle of the two top HW's because both were unbeaten. Kind of like Pac vs Floyd hype back in the day. And then Tyson Ko'd Spinks easily in round 1.

It was a shame Tyson lost to Douglas before he could fight Holyfield, and then went to jail. Evander was groomed to be a HW champion, winning a gold medal in the Olympics, and was supposed to be the real legitimate challenge to Mike. Instead of these two fighting in their primes, Evander got his belt KOing Douglass, and fought a somewhat past prime Tyson.

Tyson would get embarrassed.

The thing with Wladimir is that he hasn't had those career edges for quite some time. With Tyson we can say that he was that strong in 88, that deteriorated in 91 and past his best in 96..

Whats the difference between 2007-2010 Wladimir, 2010-2013 Wladimir and Wladimir today. Has he deteriorated or gotten better?
