Long time lurker , just watched the Mike Tyson Documentary. It got me thinking whenever I talk boxing with friends they automatically bring up Tyson and how great he was , with a few friends calling him TBE. I disagree ,I don't even think he was better than Bowe but just me. My question to you is where do you rank Tyson in his era and all time?

He was the greatest. Not only inside the ring, but also outside the ring.

    Love me some Iron Mike.

Tyson was a beast but never really had a challenge until he lost focus then he went to prison and wasn't the same, his era Holyfield was the guy,

The "Tyson was never actually that good" days are coming, that took a long time compared to Fedor/Anderson/GSP.

This. I feel most casual boxing fans only know him as a knock out artist but in his earlier and best days his entries and technique was there along with his freakish explosive power. After Cus died and he stopped training with Kevin Rooney he started to rely on his KO power and headhunting too much.

Mike was a beast, went down hill quick after cus died. Abandoned headmovement and technique cuz he was able to just wreck shit with power. any undersized heavyweight KO machine is gonna be in the top 10 of most fans, just off of sentimentality I guess.

The thing with mike is that we didn't really get to see him in his prime vs the bigger names at the time which is a shame, so its hard to rank him high to some people.

Tyson was a beast tho, can't sleep on em. Ina perfect world he'd hold his own vs any of the HW greats. You'd really have to have seen it as it happened, dude was a phenom and destroying eveything and was youngest hw champ ever. That alone makes him worth honorable mention

    Cus died in '85.

Let's count how often the word "beast" is going to pop up here.

    It depends how you judge..

Are we talking career accomplishments? because then he is lower top 10..or 10-20 of all time great heavyweights.

Are we talking prime Tyson? Honestly I think prime Tyson's movement was the most beautiful thing in the history of any combat sport. He was an undersized heavyweight, who under Cus's tutelage mastered a unique style. There has never been anything like it, and maybe there never will be again.

I watch prime Tyson and I honestly think that he was THE greatest athlete ever, in any sport. It just boggles the mind he was able to move that fast as a heavyweight, have that sort of power and literally perfect technique.

Have you seen him skip rope?? He was skipping as fast as a prime Roberto Duran ffs. To beat Mike in his prime you would have needed to have an absolutely iron head, leaned on him to wear him out, and have unreal power.

But regardless of how you think he would fair against the top 10 heavyweights prime vs prime (you have to acknowledge he would have at least been competitive with any of them), he is up there as a GOAT athlete.

EDIT:If anything Tyson's prime abilities are grossly underrated now because he became a completely mainstream figure. Therefore experts, media figures and hardcore fans dismiss him to some extent, because they want to appear knowledgeable and they want to stick it to every casual fan who only knows Tyson. It's natural fans want to be original and unique and bring up older names that are more obscure, so as to appear more knowledgeable. Or at the very least to freshen the debates. I imagine boxing fans from the Tyson era are sick of discussing him whenever it comes about that they enjoy, train, or compete in boxing.

I agree he's competitive versus almost anybody, but an all time great athlete I'm not sure

I can't think of a better athlete honestly..

He demonstrates strength, speed, and control over his movement that I just don't see on other athletes. It's perfection.
