I say No, although he had sociopathic tendencies, I don't think he was a full blown sociopath.

I'd say Ralph Cifaretto was more of a scociopath than Tony. Dude was cold and fucked up. Killed a pregnant 20 year old girl and his treatment of animals. Man was a crazy.

What say you sherdog.

He didn't seem to have much of a conscience and rationalized all kinds of shit.

When he
suffocated Christopher
that pretty much sealed the deal in my mind.

No, he just grew up in and into the business.

Serious anger issues and mommy lol issues.

Well his mother issues were very well founded.

Let me explain:

When Tony was a kid and he saw his father and uncle Junior cut off the pinky of Mr. Satriales in the butcher shop it was followed by what seems to be Tony's father and his mother showing their sexuality in the kitchen after she cooked a big meal for the family.

Now the meat also came from Satriales butcher shop which in turn made Tony pass out (his first panic attack) when his father was cutting into it. So the only time Tony saw his parents being affectionate was after his mom cooked a good meal. This combined with the pinky being cut off and the meat reinforced Tony's panic attacks. Later we see Tony passing out from meat in other episodes of the show.

Yeah but Tony actuslly loved his family and his children even though he came off as a jerk off bully at times.

He did have connections with people and you see his emotions throughout the show.

So, I definitely don't think he was a full blown sociopath, but he had tendencies

He looked out for family members until it contradicted his self-interest.

He had a very self-centered view of life and seemed to frame everything in terms of how it affected or advanced him. I don't recall him really doing anything even mildly self-sacrificial, but it has been a while since I saw the show.

He most certainly was selfish, I can't disagree with that, but the emotions he showed throughout the show was proof enough he wasn't a full blown sociopath.

Like I said above, Ralphie was much more a sociopath then Tony

Sociopaths can feel very strongly about their own situation, desires, peril, frustrations, obstacles, punishments.

I really don't remember Tony displaying any kind of empathy for others...

He had real connections with people throughout the show though.

For instance, he always held a soft spot for PUSS even though he ratted on them and had to be killed.

It was a theme in many episodes of the show.

It's a nuanced character that is open to interpretation. He certainly wasn't a sadist, to his credit.

You have to be like it or not when you're a boss like that.

Sociopath-yes, psychopath-no. I don't think he'd rate super high on The Hare Test (30 and up), all though higher then most...high teens, low twenties maybe.

Yeah, is agree. Tony is extremely layered and has many sides to his emotions

I also get the feeling that he wishes he could runaway from his life and start over again. Many Epiosdes depict this type of feeling. I think deep down tony feels deep remorse his children had to grow up in that life. He had to be tough, or at least act tough, because of his profession.

Even after being shot he had feelings for uncle June

Yes, but it could be viewed as a continuing need for Uncle June's approval, which he never got. Offing him would close that door.

Uncle June did say "Tony would never be a varsity athletes to the girl cousins."

Lol
