It's a Ronald Wright quote attributed to Steinbeck.

"Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires."
Which is why the US currently has more millionaires than any other country on earth.

The point shouldn't be "i'm useless and need help" nor should it be "Riches and riches! wahoo!" but somewhere inbetween.

$1,000,000 in 1930 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $15,563,952.10 in 2020, a difference of $14,563,952.10 over 90 years.

Meanwhile the average income was $1,368.
$1,368 in 1930 is worth $21,291.49 today

The context of that quote is very important.

I refuse to believe that Dutch is a real language and not just what happens when the English get dyslexia.
Dutch from the Netherlands is way, way different from Dutch in Belgium. We use archaic personal pronouns which would be like using "thou" instead of you or whatever in English. Just slightly less medieval, but still.

For example "Jij mag niet stelen.", which means "You can't steal." would be "Gij moogt niet stelen." which is more archaic sounding. It depends on the region, and we learn "jij" instead of "gij" in Belgium too, but nearly nobody speaks formal Dutch here.

We're also less screachy, imo. The vowels and consonants are different.

There are so many dialects in Flanders, and I have to put in a lot of effort to understand most of the thick ones.

@Pseudo Sane I had to call the customer service of my internet and cellphone provider, and apparently they outsource most of it to the Netherlands. It was awful. She didn't understand anything of what I was saying. I heard her audibly sighing and she was so annoyed, even when I started to talk superslow and as clear as possible.

It was her fault mostly.

Still better than India.
