Dragonlord's Review of WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES
    (No Spoilers)

Bottom Line: With an amazing lifelike quality and a superb, soulful acting performance, I'm now convinced Caesar is real and Andy Serkis is the CGI one.

[Note: Not feeling well. Apologies if this review is not as well-written as I'd like it to be.]

Two years after the events of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Caesar (Andy Serkis) and the apes are in the middle of a war with a human military faction called Alpha-Omega, led by the Colonel (Woody Harrelson).

The special effects on the apes is simply amazing and flawlessly rendered but it is Caesar who shines the brightest with amazingly detailed facial expressions and a soulful performance by motion-capture king Andy Serkis.

The other exemplary performance is from Woody Harrelson who portrays the ruthless Colonel, who is clearly a homage to Marlon Brando's Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now. The nod to the 1979 war film is more obvious with a graffiti display of "Ape-opaclypse Now." They did a good job of providing a backstory for the Colonel's motivation that I sort of empathize with the character. And his comeuppance is nothing short of poetic.

Two notable new characters are Bad Ape (Steve Zahn), a zoo chimpanzee who adds some much needed levity to the film, and Nova (Amiah Miller), an adorable young girl who is unable to talk but her expressiveness speaks volumes. Nova, who is the same character in the original 1968 series, is instrumental in reminding Caesar of his humanity so to speak.

They also added a new element to the story that would make for the events of the 1968 original movie more feasible.

Aside from Apocalypse Now, there's a lot of movie (The Great Escape to name a few) and genre nods (western). But the most allegorical resemblance is from the Book of Exodus where a heavily-burdened Caesar must lead his apes to the promise land. The very end of the final battle even has a spectacular Exodus resolution. The Colonel building a wall could also be interpreted as wink to current events.

Overall, War for the Planet of the Apes is a touching, emotionally-charged ending to a fantastic trilogy.

    Rating: 8/10

WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Brings Back Original Series Character

A girl stands facing a gorilla as the massive creature reaches out to her. In the real world, the scene is ripe for the evening news. In War for the Planet of the Apes (out July 14), it’s a rare moment of serenity.

The third film of the reboot series picks up two years after the conclusion of 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, when the hyper-intelligent Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his simian tribe face an uncertain future with what remains of the military heading straight for them. Now years into the conflict, Caesar is a changed ape, battle-hardened and at risk of losing all sympathy for mankind. In a last-ditch effort to save his people, Caesar undertakes a desperate mission to find and kill the leader of the human forces, the fearsome and Kurtz-esque Colonel (Woody Harrelson).

It’s during this journey that Caesar and his companions happens upon a young, mute girl named Nova (Amiah Miller), the character seen in the exclusive concept art above with the gorilla Luca. “The battle is not just between the humans and the apes, but in Caesar’s soul,” says director Matt Reeves. “The girl is his pull back to his empathy and — for lack of a better word — his human side.”

Fans of the original 1968 film have no doubt already clocked the girl’s name as a nod to a significant series character. Linda Harrison starred as Nova alongside Charlton Heston in both Planet of the Apes and Beneath the Planet of the Apes, but EW can confirm that the Nova of War for the Planet of the Apes is indeed the same character as the one Harrison played.

While the continuity between the reboot series and the original films has been unclear up to the point, the appearance of Nova is the most overt connection yet. Some minor ties have been previously established, though most as Easter eggs for fans. For instance, Rise of the Planet of the Apes features news casts referring to a lost spaceship called Icarus, which was also the name of the vessel carrying Taylor (Heston) in the Planet of the Apes.

Sara Canning Joins WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Cast

The simian army's ranks continue to swell, as Hell On Wheels actress Sara Canning has joined the cast of War For The Planet Of The Apes. She's set to play a new ape character - though, as is par for the course with the production, details about her character and the role she'll play have not been revealed.

The film picks up after the events of 2014's Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, and sees returning star Andy Serkis as Caesar joined by Gabriel Chavarria, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn and the recently announced Aleks Paunovic.

In addition to Hell On Wheels, Canning recently was seen in The Right Kind Of Wrong with Ryan Kwanten and Catherine O'Hara, the TV series Remedy and CW's The Vampire Diaries.

Aleks Paunovic Joins WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Cast

Aleks Paunovic is set to help swell the ranks of Caesar's army, joining 20th Century Fox's War For The Planet of The Apes as a new ape character to be revealed at a later date. The film picks up after the events of last year's Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, which saw all hope for peace between mankind and apekind dashed after a false flag-incited war.

Plot details for the next pic are scant, but it's assumed the film will see ape leader Caesar become the revered Moses-like figure from the original Planet Of The Apes series of the 1960s and '70s. Matt Reeves is directing from a script co-written with Mark Bomback.

Paunovic next will be seen in the indie Numb, which he stars in and produces. Paunovic had a recurring role during final season of Syfy's Continuum, and on the first season of iZombie and second season of The 100, both for the CW.

Judy Greer Returns for WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES

Judy Greer is set to return to the world of Fox's Planet of the Apes. The actress is set to return as Cornelia, the chimpanzee wife of apes leader Caesar in War for the Planet of the Apes. Production began last week with Matt Reeves, who directed 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, back behind the camera.

Andy Serkis is back to inhabit, via motion capture, Caesar, the evolved chimp leader, while Woody Harrelson is on board as the movie's human villain. Karin Konoval, meanwhile, is back to play Maurice, the orangutan with a gentle soul.

Greer is coming off a summer in which she appeared in some of the most notable movies of the year, including Jurassic World, Ant-Man, Tomorrowland and Entourage. Apes will reteam her with Harrelson, with whom she just finished shooting Wilson, Fox Searchlight's adaptation of a Dan Clowes graphic novel

Steve Zahn Joins WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Cast

Steve Zahn has been cast as a new ape in Fox's War for the Planet of the Apes. Matt Reeves, who directed 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, has returned as helmer for the threequel, set to hit theaters on July 14, 2017. Mark Bomback is back as screenwriter, with Chernin Entertainment producing.

Zahn's performance will be realized using motion capture technology, which brought to life Andy Serkis' Caesar in the two earlier installments of the franchise. The story line is being kept under wraps. Woody Harrelson has also been cast in the new Apes installment.

Zahn is known for his roles in That Thing You Do, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Dallas Buyers Club. He can next be seen acting alongside Danny Trejo and Adam Sandler in The Ridiculous 6, which is currently in post-production. He can also be heard in Pixar's upcoming The Good Dinosaur, lending his voice to the prehistoric project.

Woody Harrelson Cast as the Villain for WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES

Woody Harrelson has nabbed one of the leading human roles in Fox's latest Planet of the Apes installment. Matt Reeves, who directed 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, has returned as helmer for the new project, which is titled War for the Planet of the Apes. Mark Bomback also is back as screenwriter and Chernin Entertainment as the producer. Dylan Clark is also producing.

It is unclear who is returning to the new movie, which will continue the story of Caesar, the evolved ape who is brought to life via motion capture by Andy Serkis. Plot details are being kept secret, but Harrelson will play a character called the Colonel. It was recently reported that Gabriel Chavarria would play one of the new characters, but insiders say his part is small.

Harrelson is currently shooting LBJ, starring as President Lyndon B. Johnson, and will be back on the big screen in the final Hunger Games movie, which hits theaters on Nov. 20. The actor is undergoing a resurgence thanks to the critical acclaim for his work on the first season of HBO's True Detective.

Gabriel Chavarria Joins WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES

Gabriel Chavarria, who plays one of the leads in Universal's upcoming drama Low Riders, is in early talks to nab a key role in Fox's latest Planet of the Apes installment. Matt Reeves, who directed 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, has returned as the director for the new project, which has the working title War of the Planet of the Apes. Mark Bomback also is back as screenwriter and Chernin Entertainment as the producer.

It is unclear who is returning to the new movie, which will continue the story of Caesar, the evolved ape who is brought to life via motion capture by Andy Serkis. Chavarria's first role was a part in Freedom Writers, the 2007 Hilary Swank drama. A few TV appearances and a part in A Better Life, the Chris Weitz drama that starred Demian Bichir, followed.

The actor is a series regular on Hulu's East Los High and earlier this year nabbed a starring role in Low Riders, the drama from Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions and Imagine Entertainment. The movie could act as a feature breakthrough when it is released in 2016, but it is clearly opening doors for Chavarria

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is absolutely awesome in my opinion. Caesar was one of the coolest protagonists in any summer movie last year.

I wonder if Gary Oldman will return for this.

They didn't really use him enough in the last one.

man they really dont want us to use our imaginations on how the apes took over the planet

it can be inferred from the 1st movie that the virus killed off the ppl and the apes took over

it can be inferred from the 2nd movie that the infighting between the ppl left allowed the apes to take over

now the ultimate ape war between man and apes for supremacy

with that said, il prob watch it since im already too invested into the series

    Love em.

Wonder where they're gonna take cesar's character though. Not much chance he runs a war without becoming a villain. Which will be a bummer to me. Oh well, just a movie

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
Battle for the Planet of the Apes

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
War of the Planet of the Apes

Basically War of the Planet of the Apes is going to be mixture of Conquest and Battle.

Oh yeah Planet of the Apes > Rise >= Dawn.

If they are going to similar plot for Battle of the Planet of the Apes, it's the Gorilla faction that forced his hand. No Villain at all.
