Wanderlei Silva: This commission is a mess. They don't know what they are [doing]

Wanderlei Silva released a video today in which he showed his support for Jon Jones by harshly criticizing the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Below are some of his comments:

"This commission is a mess. They don't know what they are [doing]...There's no set punishment, there's no set testing system. [They] have to be professionals. [They] ask for fighters to be professionals when [they] are not.

"Everybody knows the UFC is a business. They put on fights to make money, and in those regards they're not wrong. But the entity that implements the laws for the athletes, the entity that punishes athletes and controls their lives doesn't know what they're doing...It's a commission that doesn't follow protocols or laws.

"Instead of regulating [the sport], [they] are damaging the sport."

Your thoughts?

He acted like a fool, but he has a point, the Nevada State Athletic Commission claims to follow the WADA code. According to the WADA code running away from a drug test equals a positive test, therefore you should be punished like someone who tested positive. Banning Wanderlei for life is a joke, even if he used roids for a long time durning his Pride run, he never tested positive before running away form the test, they should treat him like any first time offender.

Wand really just doesn't have a place to say anything in this. It's like Tito piling on the UFC for anything that went wrong because of bitterness

Running is the worst possible offence. If you don't understand why, then you will never understand why. Even Reem came back when he ran from a test he knew he'd fail (16:1) and Dana called him.

Another problem is that the athletes/doctors are SO far ahead of the testing procedures.
I guess there is more money on the competition side than on the regulation side, so there will always be problems.

Really, it's not normal for T/E ratios, no matter what, to be as out of whack as for UFC fighters.

seems like a few of you could benefit from a lesson in logical reasoning.

Wand's personal history should have no bearing on evaluating what he is claiming.

So...do you agree or not with his claims that the commission is a 'mess', inconsistent with their protocols and practises, punishments, etc?

IMHO, it is obviously problematic when they seem to treat each case independently and have wide latitude in applying punishment. You show up and grovel, they go easy. You play innocent or are defiant, they go harder. Fines seems to change depending on the fighter. What fighters need to do to get licensed after punishments varies widely. Testing of fighters varies widely.

There should be room to address the unique facets of each case, but there should also be FAR more transparency and consistency on the part of the ACs.

Agreed. There is so much inconsistency Also handing out a lifetime ban out of the blue with no warning or no precedence? Ridiculous

They should have had clear punishments for someone that ran from a drug test. Warn people...if you run you get a lifetime ban. Don't wait until someone does it and then all of sudden implement one.

Nobody ran from a test before. In the future they'll know not to.

This. The most beloved fighter is now the most despised. Doesn't change the fact that his criticisms are well founded. Screw the haters btw, Wand is a fucking legend.
