As a huge GSP fan, and I've become a huge Volk fan, I have to say it's interesting that Volk's W-L record is exactly the same and against very tough competition. Volk's workmanlike style isn't flashy he just neutralizes everyone and beats them a lot like GSP did. GSP has always been #1 to me but Volk is getting there.

Volk's the man. Him first winning the belt seems like a thousand years ago

GSP is still well ahead of Volk it isn't really close either... GSP fought Matt Hughes for the belt in his 8th fight and from his 10th? Fight never fought anyone buy the top 4 to 5 guys in the world in championship fights. Volk has like 9 top ten wins(and should have lost to max in fight 2... but he dominated fight 3 so meh) and never fought a top ten guy until like his 20th fight...

Same number of wins and losses yes. But at a much lower level until the last 10 fights or so.... GSP was in 15 title fights..... volk 8.... I love me some volk but at 34... he's not fighting in 7 more title fights not even close we would be lucky to get 4.

That said for him to be a GOAT like AS, Fedor, Jon Jones, GSP.... he would have had to have beaten Islam imo (or never fought him) and now he would have to beat him and defended a couple more times. That's possible if unlikely.

Volk is a machine. I realized he was going to become a long reigning champ when he beat up Mendes.

I’ll just +1 what has already been pointed out. GSP’s resume is better than Volk’s AND he avenged every loss (with style).

Volk’s a machine though and could do enough before he’s done. We’ll see.

It really doesnt matter.

They fought in different eras and different divisions.

People can just say who they like better, but theres really no point in delving too deep into this.

Bringing up GSP's avenging losses is great but Volk doesnt really have any losses needing avenging.

No it's not Volk didn't avenge his losses.

Mostly I agree. Well, obviously I agree with the different divisions comment. Different eras too, but no doubt Volk’s got a hefty number of “easier” wins on his record.

Volk is a featherweight GSP with better striking and finishing rate. GSP has the edge in BJJ.

What's he supposed to do about that though?

I just personally think we should enjoy these amazing guys while they are still competing rather than talk about how much better another guy is who has absolutley nothing to do with him whatsoever. That's just me though lol

GSP has been finished twice, tho. And once to an unranked guy from a weight class below. Volks only loss in UFC is a closely contested decision in a weight class above his own against the boogeyman of MMA currently. Volk is very close to surpassing GSP as an MMA fighter. He still needs a few title defenses tho as far as divisional dominance.

His W/L is, but his strength of schedule (era-adjusted) isn't quite there yet, nor is the number of "counting" metrics like title fight wins, top 5/10 wins, etc...

He's on the verge of locking in the GOAT FW claim though (IMO).

Edit: The "avenged vs. unavenged" loss angle makes zero sense though. Volk lost to some random on the regional scene who he can't fight now, and a strong champ at a higher weight class. It's not comparable to losing to UFC guys, and one of them being smaller than you.

Womanlike style? How disrespectful

Brother you are 100% right. Funny, I wouldn’t have thought too much about this comparison had I not seen the thread title. BUT, I am guilty of coming in and offering an opinion once I saw it. Haha.
Back to Volk - absolute pleasure to watch this guy. Seeing him adapt to what his opponent’s specialize in is awesome.

He's a unique cat. I am super inspired by watching his confidence grow as it was happening.

Volk’s performance against Islam was also much more impressive than GSPs against Bisping (one of the weakest champions ever) Imagine if Volk faced a Bisping level fighter for a second belt
lol OK
so what?
GSP was inactive for how many yrs?
Also did you know that not everyone who moves up or down a weight class is going to benefit from said change?
