He was not able to hold Max down. Not sayin holding Max down is easy thing to do, cause nobody was able to hold Max down in the recent years, but Volkanovski needs to up that part of his game. Habib had the same problem early in his ufc career, he'd take guys down effortlessly and they'd stand right back up, it took him some time, but he learned to control his opponents on the ground, pin them on the fence and now nobody is getting up from underneath Habib.
If Volkanovski ups his ground game to be able to Habib his opponents on the ground, he will become much more dangerous fighter than he already is.
His standup is already great, he is probably the best striker at 145, outstriking Max twice.

I think he's a wrestler, he usually likes to take guys down and rain down GnP [especially in his earlier fights]. Pure wrestlers, like Yoel, just have TDs and cant really control. They dont really learn either.

I disagree here, I think Max is a better striker, Zabit and KZ are also better imo.

Habib was pure free style wrassler too, couldn't hold guys down. He adapted. Now he is very tough match up for everybody.

Khabib was also very young, Volk is already in his early to mid thirties.

Gonna be hard to evolve that part of the game.
i think he is still learning. adapter pretty fast from rugby to mma champ.

He was scoring TD to score points. It wasnt the basis of his strategy and it had no purpose beside trying to have the edge in the eyes of the judges. He was attempting TDs in the last 20 seconds like he could do something with it.
If it was a point system he'd literally take him down and stand up right away.

Let's face it, guys like Volk, Khabib and Usman have proven to have the meta formula to be a Champion right now. A+ level wrestling, solid chins and superior cardio.

Low risk fighters that have mastered the grind. We already have seen CCC flash parts of that skill set as well as Curtis Blaydes (who I think is a lock to be a Champion at some point)

My question is who will be doing this at 185, 205 down the line?

Why does he need to improve his wrestling when he has proven he can hang on the feet with potentially the best striker in his division.

Australian* wrestler i.e. High School Tier wrestling on this side of the globe.

Dude entire wrestling arsenal is a strength based body lock against the cage and a telegraphed double.

Yup.

Having the ability to score some takedowns does not make him a wrestler

I'm sure he's working on everything. He hears all the negative criticism (people are practically harassing him on Instagram) and he'll come back eager to put on the best performance yet.

His ground control is still enough of a threat to make his opponents scared of being on the ground with him. I believe his pure strength has been credited before.

Hard to say he out struck Max the second time around when he took more damage and got dropped twice.

he is about 167 cm I think thats too small to keep current FW down. These days FW are too big look at Max or katar
