It does not.

Defense does not score points in MMA.
The reward for defense is not getting hurt, beat up, etc.

It is literally written in the scoring criteria that defense is not to be scored. I think the wording is "defense is its own reward" and basically it just gives you the opportunity to score points with counters etc.

Defense isn’t scored and never should be. It’s a reward in and of itself. If we start rewarding defense, you could theoretically win a fight throwing 0 strikes, 0 takedowns, 0 control, 0 submission attempts,

Metrics wise, it doesn't matter all that much. Did stuffing the TD give Volk a fighting chance? Yes, yes it did. Not arguing that stuffing TDs didn't improve the likelihood of winning. But points aren't awarded for not getting taken down.
