What’s wrong with point fighting? It’s Volks game, he frustrates opponents into falling behind and leaving him openings when they try to cover lost ground.
You’d be a fool not to see that Islam did that to him today. Volk was so invested in defending takedowns that he forgot Islam was racking up strike count.

He still won the round easily but raining punches on a gassed Islam. That sounds like smashing to me.

It's the threat of the takedown. Straight stand up the dagestani style is pretty ugly striking wise but until the time someone develops a counter to the wrestling it will keep the threat of those slow hands very real.
And it's not like they are the gravcies trying to sell the style. It's just a style built from living a very hard existance

Yeah, in that 30 second sequence at the end. What does that have to do with Volk being controlled on the ground for 3/4 of the time? 'he got held down not quite as bad as we thought' is not the same as better wrestling
I saw Islam hanging on for dear life in the 4th as Volk hit him with pitter patter punches too. Not sure what good a body lock is while you're getting hit constantly.

Punching behind your head aren't real punches and is just what you do when you've already conceded the grappling battle and know you are being controlled for as long as Islam wants. Which is why he didn't care about them and why he still won the round.

If the stats reveal that, then it betrays what I saw with my own eyes, Islam I felt, outstuck Volk and hurt him more standing.
What about the fact Islam got staggered in round 1, dropped in round 2 and again in round 5? Why do most people have Volk winning, based off his striking?

I dunno, I saw Islam stagger Volk, jab his face, kick his body, knee him repeatedly and elbow him.
I'm not denying Islam did those things but Volk also did those things and better. That's why this result is so controversial.

Volk is clearly point-oriented, and that's fair game. I think more fighters should treat this as a match with point. He kept inquiring to his corner: did I win X round? How many rounds do I need to win to get the victory? It's pretty obvious from these types of questions that he is aiming at calculating the scores. And that's perfectly good.

That's where we disagree, I think Islam did those things better, more clearly, that's just my opinion.

On the feet it was basically a wash. Both got staggered, stats are very close. But of 10 minutes on the ground, Islam was dominant the large majority of the time. I think people are conflating 'Wow compared to expectations that he'd be dominated, Volk is doing really good on the ground ' with "Wow Volk is winning on ground". But you can't lose rounds on the ground if you aren't dominant on the feet, and Volk was not dominant in the standup battle
Actually I think the opposite is happening. People on sherdog were expecting Islam to be dominant and because of that they see success where in most other fights most people would only see neutralisation or failure. The fact of the matter is, Volk landed more strikes on the feet and knocked Islam down twice while Volk only took a knee once. And don't give me that 'he was wobbled!!!' BS because the definition of someone wobbling changes from fight to fight.

Islam had more in two rounds and a third was a tie. And it is one KD on the stats not two. We all saw Volk take heavy shots, you can argue he edged out the standup, but he didn't dominate on the feet. And unfortunately for him, over 10 minutes of the fight were not on the feet, and he was controlled for most of it.
He looked impressive at the end but sadly for him, fights aren't judged by the trajectory at the very end. Nor should they be, unless we get rid of rounds. If we did get rid of rounds, Volk would be in a body triangle still trying to reach over his shoulder. There's no real way you can slice it to claim Volk won the fight without cherrypicking.
