TJ claimed that he stopped pushing for the DJ fight when he realized that DJ didn't want to fight TJ. He says that he's not going to bully DJ into a fight with him so he laid off.

Honestly, I felt that TJ vs DJ would have done numbers.
Not only that but no body wants to see DJ fight anyone else. DJ vs Cejudo 2 will not do numbers

I thought Dana said the same thing at the presser Friday

Dillashaw is simply quoting the UFC's answer, which was very nondescript to begin with.

The UFC, or let's just be honest and say Dana White, always says and does these sorts of things as a negotiation tactic to lower costs.

Did everyone forget about Nurmagomedov signing a contract to fight Alvarez for the title at UFC 205? White had also said that McGregor was injured and needed to defend his Featherweight title. Then the next day it's announced McGregor is fighting Alvarez instead? It was a tactic to lower both McGregor and Alvarez' asking prices. I can cite the articles if someone wants to doubt the truth of what I'm saying (at the moment I'd rather be lazy though).

Remember when White said that GSP is never coming back, and doesn't have the mentality of a fighter? They were in the middle of renegotiating a contract because GSP had a pre-Reebok contract and wanted compensated his loss in UnderArmour money. Lo and behold, GSP returned despite what White claimed.

Dana White has no qualms about slandering a fighter's name and reputation if it means he has to pay them less money, and this instance is no different.

Or an HJ or ZJ. What's a ZJ, you ask? If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

DJ vs TJ is the only Flyweight fight I'm even remotely interested in watching.

Too fucking right??

TJ is the heavier fighter! ... Man, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills on this fucking forum sometimes.

Why should DJ feel any pressure or obligation to put not only his belt, but also his reputation on the line to challenge a champ in a heavier weight class?? TJ has no right to suggest this fight is reasonable or relevant.

With cross-weight fights, the challenge must always come from the lighter fighter to the heavier fighter. Not the other way around for obvious reasons.

When Dana says "he doesn't want fight" it means "he doesn't want to fight for cheap".

[shrug] This isn't exactly a controversial statement. The actions of the two fighters over the last year have been in line with this. Besides just taking a quick look at the pros and cons for each fighter shows why this would be.

TJ
Pros
A win against DJ would serious increase TJ career and would definitely increase his future paydays. Also a loss at flyweight wouldn't really affect him much as he could still fight in title fights at Bantamweight.
Cons
He is taken on the fighter who is generally considered the #1 pound for pound fighter. He has never cut down to flyweight and could be severely affected by the cut.

DJ
Pros
Gets a superfight at his own weight class/doesn't have to move up in weight. An opportunity to beat a champion/belt holder. (This gets overlooked I think because he is the first ever champion so he didn't get to "build his brand" by defeating another champion. A chance to make some real money in a single fight.
Cons
His legacy is almost entirely built on his title fight streak. This would be his first real test against it. Winning will only help his legacy a little vs beating and extending his title reign. Probably is never going to be a draw at this point so why chase fights that would be big enough to earn him PPV points.

Personally I think DJ is making a mistake as this is a fight I think a lot of people would love to see. He has pretty much cleaned out his division with the only thing left are a bunch of rematches against fighters he has already crushed. I think DJ is underestimating how much a win over TJ would elevate his earning potential and even if he loses I have a hard time seeing TJ staying at flyweight anyway. If he is worried about the belt he could propose a 130 pound catchweight fight.

DJ is the most overrated fighter we've had in this sport.

everyone in MMA is trying to sell him and none of us are falling for it.

DJ is injured I don’t get why this is an issue.

So what. DJ defends.

He wanted more for TJ

He has the longest defensive streak, rivaling Silva and he rarely pulls out of fights.

He deserves credit by the UFC despite being the lowest drawing champ. Not his problem he's like 5'3 and making it work for him, He finishes fights

Wait?? Dana isn't honest?? Fuck, this must be how it feels when you find out santa isn't real

Stop you f*king pouting and defend your BW belt in your on God damn weightclass, trying to kill yourself to fight smaller and avoid Cody....

How do you think the sellers misrepresent him? What skills would he need to have for you not to consider him overrated?

it's not his skill. it's his weight class. 125 pounds? come on man. average man in America is 180 pounds. this dude fights 55 lbs below. 135 is pushing it too.

how many truly great athletes are that small.

just like good Heavyweights are so hard to find. it's the averages.

even boxers don't get notroity until they move past 135 lbs in their career.
