Video of Telles' Turtle Guard

Incredible. I use alot of Telles stuff when wearing a gi. He is very adept with it though, and I would love for that guy to have an instructional come out...

i wonder how the hell he decided to train the turtle position like that. really gotta think outside the box

While that is really cool, I feel bad for all the people that are going to try this and fail at it. Nothing hurts like seeing someone do a move well, then you try it and get destroyed.

that part of the game.. how are you going to get better at something if you never try it?

bjj is a very personalized art. What works for the "unique people" such as telles does not work for other people no matter how talented they may be. Now, after all that being said.. let me just say " OOOH TEH TEHH! OOH TEHH TEHH!! OOOOOOSSSS!!!" TT Korea baby!!

i saw him try that against roger in adcc, didn't go so well =(

it's difficult to play without the gi.

Exactly correct. I just learned the flying armbar yesterday during practice. Therefore, I tried it four times in randori against three different people. Not one clicked, but then I got to practice my side-mount escapes... ;) Practice makes perfect!

All im saying is that some new guys are going to see "Look what this guy is doing to Jacare!!!" and try to master the back. The thing is, If someone is good at attacking the back better then you are at the turtle, your screwed. And if you ever want to do no-gi or mma, you are screwed with this kind of style.

yeah i defending from the turtle is a bad habbit.... might work for bjj but if you try to pull that in a real fight your just going to get stomped.

not too bad...Having seen lots of HS level wrestling basically it appears he was willing to give up the takedown and work on reversals from the Turtle(referee's position)..at one point I saw he had gurd or half guard and when the pass was attempted he went right back to turtle. he even hit what is called a peterson roll which i guess would score as as a sweep in BJJ but he lost it within 2 or 3 seconds.
Interesting game though.

That IS one that can be taught to wrestlers VERY quickly so long as they guard the choke.

interesting watching the turtle being used. but that works good for him, not for about 99% percent of grapplers..

at adcc some japanese guy fought macacao and was giving up his back and fighting from the turtle and he got dominated

People complaining that this doesn't work for MMA or self defense are missing the hilarious point that a BJJ black belt can take something judo is criticized for and turn it into an amazing game.

good point ..not that ive watched TOO much Judo but the judo i have seen the turtle is very passive. This was more agressive. It didnt exactly look like wrestling referee position either but there were some similarities that I saw like a near switch position at the beginning and the prior mentioned petersons roll.

Not to be a thread hijaker..but this could be a decent intro to discuss how come some fighters are getting away with exposing their backs in mma and grappling.

Based on the bjj point system it is one of the worst spots to be in yet I have seen in various comps where the back exposure did not cause a submission or even a bad beating when the one giving up the back had soem knowledge of escapes and reversals(judoka, wreslters) discuss?

I haven't seen stuff like that before but I have heard of Telles and his turtle guard. Could someone please explain what he's looking for specifically? Like I saw a couple of sweep attempts but what is he trying to set up? Is he waiting of Jacare to overbalance and over commit or what????

I was thinking the exact same thing.
