Victor Estima and the ESTIMA LOCK

Excited to get this! Just got to train with one of Victor's black belts and he showed me a few key details on the lock. Will be great to see Victor teach it himself too.

Sorry what's on demand?
Like a budo videos style of netflix?
Are the mundials on there?

Really cool. Glad to see the renewed focus on leglocks form BJJ guys lately!

So whats the latest information about estima lock, is it IBJJF legal in blue & purple level?
I hearded first that its legal but now some ref say it isnt..

I second that question. I have been discussing it with training partners but we can't find a clear consensus, although our black belt says it's legal because you are not applying a figure four hold on the foot, which is what is forbidden beow brown belt.

It is a legal ankle lock per IBJJF rules at all ranks.

Source? Last I heard, it was considered a toe hold. Has there been an explication in the rules recently?

I have not seen any updates to the rules that makes it illegal. Now if a referee DQ'd someone for using that move it doesn't necessarily means the rules forbid it. I've seen guys DQ'd for using the Williams guard shoulder lock and the ref confused it for a bicep slicer (purple belts). Mistakes happen so unless they specifically state in the rules that the grip is illegal at any level in their rule book it should be legal.

I just emailed the IBJJF and hope they will clarify the submission below brown belt.

If that was the case, one-handed toeholds would be legal for all ranks, no?

You don't need the figure four to finish a toehold, given enough leg control. Other hand can be controlling the heel or even the knee or something else completely.

I haven't heard of an official ruling yet but Personally I would advise purple belts and lower not do them in competition. The Estima lock is basically a toehold using a reverse figure 4 grip and your stomach to apply the pressure.

Victor Estima is quoted as saying that the "Estima Lock" has been classified as a straight foot lock and is legal at all belt levels.

EDIT* Now whether or not IBJJF refs DQ people for doing it is an entirely different matter!
