Did Guillard come into this fight overconfident like he did Lauzon or Cerrone? He was talking ALOT of shit about Varner saying he was scared of him. I think Jamie did really well in this fight.
Man, guillard is so fucking mentally all over the place i wouldn't put it past him, honestly. the dude is so emotional and dictates how he fights so much. Either he will be on top of the fucking world do cartwheels and punching people out left and right, or he will completely lose his swagger and have a really hard time bouncing back.
I thought he was almost looking past him, like he wasn't taking him seriously or at the least letting himself get radged up and not focusing. Good win for Varner though.
This. I really don't like Melvin as a fan, but he clearly he is incredibly talented and I don't know why or how he can't put it together. I can only call it as maturity and committment being lacking. He then is so emotional as you said that it hurts him more than he will ever admit.
He fought to the best of his abilities, you guys just have too high of expectations for him at this point.
I think Guillard actually fought pretty well. Varner is a really good fighter and they had a good fight. Some people still overestimate Guillard.
Overconfidence is basically the excuse given every time Melvin loses. Melvin looked better than he has in a long time. He was just fighting someone better than him for like the 10th time.
being fast and having muscles does not = incredibly talented, when will people figure this out? Varner has better boxing, better cardio, better wrestling, a better chin and better bjj but Guillard has big muscles so he's more talented. Will never understand the fascination some of you have with other men's muscles.
Melvin has been practicing throwing guys off of his back if they dont have the hooks in. He threw Jamie off his back twice last night. If Melvin would pressure fighters more I believe he would have more luck. Im a Cerrone fan, but I think Melvin could have finished Cowboy if he would have stayed on him. Varner can take a shot.
Nah, Varner's just a lot better than I wish he was! He won me some cash though so not complaining, I would have liked to see Guillard bounce back but Varner was just a bit too well-rounded for him.
he fought a better fighter. it was a winnable fight for him, but varner is no slouch as an athlete to match melvin. and varner has better tools. bjj, slight edge in wrestling, maybe technical boxing, and chin.
Here is the thing about Melvin. He is Melvin, and you aint gonna change Melvin. But respect Melvin because he fights whenever he can and he doesnt give up. Look at his record and respect the guy for it. Also he did pretty good in last nights fight.
Guillard fans are some of the most delusional fans on Sherdog imo He fought very smart last night, was patient, didn't rush in, used lots of leg kicks, but he got dropped in the first and out wrestled the entire fight. He landed some brutal shots that would have put most guys out like that head kick, but Varner has an insane chin and was the better fighter. Face it, Melvin has too many holes in his game, he gets rocked by Cerrone, Joe Daddy, Lauzon, Stephens, Varner. He's been subbed more times then i can remember and he was soundly out wrestled last night.
Melvin has good striking skills, but he lacks in all other places imo. Every time we see him display his good striking, he ends up getting submitted by a BJJ guy. Guillard had to play it safe vs. Varner cuz he would get taken down easier than he did if he tried to do his flashy striking. In conclusion, Melvin is a good striker, that is it. You will only see his full potential as a fighter when he fights other pure strikers and doesn't need to fear being taken down. People should stop using excuses as to why Melvin loses fights, other than what I already said above. His mind is always in the fight, but he's either not bright (jump kicks vs. grappler's), or uses his brain and holds back in fear of being countered.
Maybe he's just really really really really really really really really really really confident and needs one more loss to be humbled.
