Variations of Wrestling for Dummies

Nice, concise descriptions. Here's to hoping it stays up for a while, and answers a lot of questions for us.

This deserves to stay up a bit longer.

greco wrestling, while less mma-related because of the stricter rules, is still actually pretty cool. lotta suplexing going on.

I used to think that Greco had limited applicability to mma but have changed my mind. The fact that the clinch is worked extensively in Greco is very helpful when in the clinch in mma. Randy Couture was a Greco guy and you can see how well he performed in the clinch in mma. Rulon Gardner was able to win his only mma fight with only a few months of training because of his ability to control the clinch. Also, many Greco takedowns will land you outside of the guard (usually in side control). The fact that most (if not all) Greco wrestlers have a strong base in folkstyle or freestyle usually means that they also have a well rounded wrestling game.

Yes, this is definitely one of the better contributions to the grappling forum. It really would be useful to have this stickied, as it would educate, and save a good deal of space that would be spent answering questions that a simple visit to this thread could answer.

If he included how to score points, I would agree.:D For takedowns especially. 3 is maximum I believe but didn't it used to be 4 for collegiate?

Folk style doesn't really emphasize throws, but you can pull five points in Greco' with a terrific throw. Anyway, for folk style you're only gonna' get two points for the take down.
The only problem with discussing the scoring of takedowns in Greco' is that a good deal of the process is subjective; there are guidelines for how the throws are to be scored (anything over hip level is big points, and skying the guy really high is usually a guaranteed five) but it's still going to come down to how the ref calls it.

I swear I scored 4 points for a throw in wrestling but my buddy who is a top wrestler says that in Highschool I could only get 3 here in Canada. This is a while ago. What type was that...any idea? Thanks.

You'll get three points if it's a big throw, or you finish the throw with exposure. What I meant was that (at least in high school) it's generally two points. Anything above the waste, and some big lifts, that throw the person to danger is what gets the extra point. How the throw is terminated is usually what determines a high scoring throw; I've seen some pretty good throws get called for two when they should've been threes, just because the ref wanted to see exposure at the end of the throw.
Anyway, sorry about that. I didn't mean for it to sound like you could only get two points for any takedown. I was generalizing too much.

I see. So you are pretty sure I didn't get 4 also. I know I got 3's but I remember a 4-0 score showing when I made a throw and I am positive about that. Maybe I caught benefit of the scorekeepers mistake. Only ask because we fought rediculous about it. :icon_lol:

17 years ago? You sure?

No, that's not hard to believe at all. I'm not saying you got four from a takedown, but if you got a three point takedown off of a reversal or an escape, that's going to be 4-0 in the end.

But it was 4-0 on the score and that disregards my reversal. Kinda dumb as I don't know what happened just remember the situation. Was there really never a score for 4 in collegite in canada or whatever I did in high? I know I got points for control after but....if there was no score for 4 then my buddy was right.

how long ago was this match when you got 4 for a throw....fila rules change all the time and at one time they had a rule that you could get 3 for the throw and an appreciation point if the throw had a lift from the mat.
