From fightnews...

Golden Boy Promotions has issued the following statement with regard to WBC super featherweight world champion Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas:

“As part of a voluntary testing program that Francisco Vargas requested ahead of his June 4 fight, he tested positive for clenbuterol. Francisco believes he tested positive due to ingesting contaminated meat in Mexico where clenbuterol is commonly used by ranchers in livestock feed. The Associated Press reported this week that this practice may impact athletes throughout the country ahead of the 2016 Olympics.

“Francisco has, is and will always be a clean fighter. That is why he insisted on this voluntary testing program ahead of the first defense of his WBC championship. He previously tested clean as part of this same voluntary testing regiment and in all of his previous fights. He will immediately leave Mexico to finish his training camp in the US in order to avoid any possible repeat of this situation and is fully cooperating with the California State Athletic Commission to submit to all required testing ahead of his June 4 title defense.”

Can't blame the Russians for this one!

Damn that mexican meat!

I read the title and thought "dudes been retired for years, let him do some drugs."

Shit....damn shame. Really liked this guy too

wait...fernando vargas or francisco?

if its francisco will it effect his win over miura?

Fuck it

If we get another performance like in the Miura fight why not?

It was Francisco. I copied the headline from fightnews and they had it wrong.

From everything I've read it won't have any effect on anything. Won't even delay his fight scheduled in a little over a month. Must be nice being a Golden Boy fighter. Even positive drug tests can't touch you.

When Erik Morales tested positive for the same stuff and blamed tainted meat they gave him a 2 year suspension if I remember correctly.

Iirc it was clenbutorol and he blamed it on tainted meat. Top rank, the wbc and the nysac all knew he had failed the test before the fight and told usada to fuck off because they could sanction him all they want but unless the commission sanction him the usada sanctions mean nothing except he couldn't fight in amateur bouts in America.

But it was a two year suspension.

damn, Vargas looked pretty talented too, kinda like a Mexican Meldrick. SFW just got shook up a lot

Yeah it was the same stuff and he blamed the same thing for it. I am pretty sure though that he was banned from fighting at all in the states and had to have his retirement fight out of the country because of the usada. I could be wrong though.

So apparently there will be no punishment.

WBC commends CSAC decision on Francisco Vargas
The WBC has commended the California State Athletic Commission for the way they have handled WBC super featherweight champion Francisco Vargas and the positive clenbuterol result from an anti-doping test. Vargas will be granted a temporary license to defend his belt against Orlando Salido on June 4 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, subject to continued random drug testing. Vargas was warned that will be no tolerance if there are any further problems.

WBC Statement: Vargas spoke to WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman and expressed his disappointment, as this situation could picture him in the wrong manner. At the same time, he expressed that he is calm, working hard, and training for June 4. Vargas is absolutely certain that the positive test comes from a delicious and traditional dish that his mother cooked, a broth with beef that he ate for dinner the night he was tested and the following day for lunch.

Vargas was tested in California, with a negative result, just five days before the test conducted in Mexico. He traveled to Mexico for his training camp for the Salido fight, which will take place on June 4, and the test showed positive. There is well-documented history of this type of positive results of Clenbuterol in Mexico, especially in soccer, and it is well known that beef is in many instances the source of the positive test.

Vargas has demanded the WBC and the corresponding authorities to take any action to make sure that his name and reputation is cleared from this very unfortunate situation. He enrolled voluntarily in the random testing program, which by itself is clear evidence that he is a clean fighter.

The WBC congratulates the California State Athletic Commission for the way they have handled this matter, which brings certainty to the boxing world that doping issues must by handled immediately and openly, but at the same time, with absolute responsibility to make sure justice prevails.

The WBC also wishes to acknowledge the exemplary and monumental work done by VADA and Dr. Margaret Goodman with the sole intention to keep our sport clean and safe for the contestants.
