Let's admit this: a lot of people saw Francis and Yoel as another black explosive dudes that won't improve. They did improve. Despite not taking up the sport from when they were little, they have shown miraculous amount of improvement and evolution.
So what do all these fighters share? They know 3 or more languages. Knowing more languages is proven to help brain plasticity and memory, not to mention it ingrains appreciation for learning.
Francis knows Cameroonian, French, English.
Yoel knows Spanish, German, English.
Valentina always tries to learn new languages.
Khabib claims for turkish and other languages are a bit skeptical, but he at least knows Dagestani, Russian and English out of convenience.

tl;dr: monolinguals btfo

Jonny Bones has arguably the best Fight IQ in the game and has shown to adjust and improve mid-fight. How many languages does he know?
English and some Spanish.

I think Khabib is a native Avar, didn't speak Russian until he was a teenager if I'm not mistaken (could be wrong).

English and some Spanish.

Based on Breaking Bad I thought residents of Albuquerque, NMX knew a little / most basic of basic spanish.

Jones is smart in the cage. Not so much when he steps outside of it.

Yoel was an olympic wrestler...

Khabib being muslim he does speak Arabic too ; remeber i watched an interview to the late Abdulmanap in which he talks about this turkish school Khabib used to go , i guess he learned the language then.

Being Olympian does have merit, but thing is that he never quite utilized his wrestling to the degree like DC did. He started striking and even stroke from a new stance when he was 40yo. He was quite old to make improvements.

I am on the fence on this since he claims to know 6 languages(Kumyk, Avar, Russian, English, Turkish, and Arabic), but he still doesn't use proper grammar in English after all these years. I don't consider knowing 50-100 words to be at the level of "knowing a language."

I mean most of them either picked that up because of the circumstances of their life (Yoel, Francis) and tho others due to their birth/background (Khabib - Russian and Dagestani and Valentina Spanish and Russian(?)). English isnt that impressive either since its basically needed to promote yourself in the UFC and half the world speeks that language anyway. Its not that they decided to learn a new language out of nowwhere. Its impressive over all but they are no scholars or anything like that. Its really not that uncommon nowadays to speak atleast 3 languages.

Circumstances of life is what makes fighters though. We also know there are plenty of people who never bother to learn properly or even try to push their immigrant language on nations. I am not claiming they are scholars, but that through learning multiple languages thorough their life, they as fighters can respect the learning process. Not only that, multiple languages increase brain plasticity, the ability to take in and adapt to new circumstances.
