Even if you came here as 1st gen immigrant, if you aren't Black, you don't have the negative baggage they carry. Natives have their own negative baggage but aren't viewed with the same disdain as Blacks.

You are looking at it all wrong when you think it is about "connections". It is about societal perceptions and problems emmanating from socio-economic standing.

Look, the role that whites played in slavery is atrocious. Racism still exists, but the main culprit to any problems African-Americans have these days isn't because of a slave past or because of racism. It's because there's too big a subculture within African-American culture that keeps many of them suppressed. Any time another black person points this out they're called an uncle tom or critized for not being "black enough". It's not racism that causes African-Americans to lead the nation in fatherless homes or in STD rates. Like Chris Rock said, as an African-American you get more respect coming out of prison than out of college. Too many idolize thug life and want to play the victim. The Irish, Italians, and Asians all faced racism when they came here. Especially the Asians. The largest mass lynching in US history wasn't of black people in the South, it was of Chinese in California. There was all kinds of vigilantism against Chinese and hell, even in the 20th century tends of thousands of Japanese were put into camps and had their property confiscated during WWII. Are they down there socioeconomically with African-Americans? Nope. Are they below whites? Nope. They're at the top of the heap. Because it's largely not about slavery and racism. The main thing that keeps some groups down is their own culture.
