People are judging that Usman looked better against Burns than Khamzat did, therefore he will beat Khamzat. Ignoring that MMA math often doesn’t work, there are a few reasons Usman should be very worried:
1.) When he fought Gilbert, he was 34 years old and 10 years into his MMA career. Khamzat was 27 and less than 4 years into his career. These two men did not take this fight at comparable times. When Usman was 4 years into his career, he was grinding decisions over guys like Alexander Yakovlev. Not fighting killers in the top 3.
2.) Khamzat is about to turn 28. Usman is about to turn 35. Physically, Khamzat gets stronger each day and Usman gets a little slower, a little less explosive, etc.
If Khamzat had fought Usman last night, he probably would have lost. But unfortunately for Usman, he doesn’t get to fight Khamzat less than 4 years into his career. Their fight likely won’t take place until 2023. Khamzat will be a year older, have gained valuable experience and be stronger and faster. He will grow as a fighter whereas Usman only can decline at his age.
