He was purely a striker against Colby, Burns and Masvidal the second time. The first Masvidal fight he clinched and held him agains the cage, but didn’t wrestle much at all.

I wonder why that’s the case? Usman used to shoot doubles, hip toss, etc. all the time. And more strangely, strikers still fight him with their hands low like they are scared to death of a takedown even though he’s winning by KOs now and hasn’t landed a takedown in 2 years.

Colby needs to wrestle this guy to win.

Who needs to wrestle when you can knock a mofo out?

The threat of takedown opens his hands up. He's experimenting with his hands. Hope he doesn't go the Romero route. Although Romero stopped wrestling to conserve energy.

What he did to Masvidal in the first fight was wrestling. Mas is actually a great defensive wrestler. Can't be predictable and do an Askren. Took Mas down in the rematch too.

For Burns, you don’t wanna wrestle that guy. Why go into his guard when you can just jab the shit out of him from the outside?

With Colby, why wrestle an elite wrestler when you can knock his ass out?

Is Colby even that good off his back? Same with Usman. I've haven't even seen or heard anything from his training camp how he plans to fight against Usman this time around. What is the strategy this time around, so to speak

Usman is trying out leg kicks. Wtf is Colby doing differently? His ass should've been training with Khabib and DC at AKA. Learn some damn Sambo from the best.

Came to say this. Clinchwork and wall n stall (for lack of better term) are wrestling.

He was controlling Masvidal's body and determining his position. That's wrestling.

he's recently found out he has a solid chin and huge KO power in his hands. So he just uses the wrestling as a backup. Pointless for a wrestler to go to the ground with a BJJ guy... risk of sub is too high. less risky to keep it standing against former 155ers.

if there was a guy at 170 built like usman and an elite K1 striker... you can bet usman will use his wrestling.

He's more confident in his striking and he's fighting guys that are difficult to wrestle with (Colby being a very good wrestler himself, Masvidal being hard to take down and being skilled on the ground)

He wrestled the shit out of Masvidal lol. Clinching is wrestling and he also took him down multiple times.

But yeah he seems to want to strike lately. Its probably just what he's working on the most and he's starting to get comfortable there for the first time. In the past Usman looked stiff and uncomfortable striking even when he was being effective.

Honestly if he clinched and wrestled with Colby the first time he probably would have won the fight easier because he's both stronger and a better wrestler but he gave Colby the only kind of fight he could win and still knocked him out.

Nowdays tho he is so much better as a striker he can just smash Colby in that area. He's improved a good bit in the striking and Colby has had a single fight where he looked flat after he left the gym that built him in ATT in favor of a no name gym.

All the variables are in Usman's corner for this fight. I don't think this one is going to be close.

He is falling in love with his hands and for good reason. 1-punch KOing Masvidal was huge, not only because Masvidal is great boxer, but also because Masvidal has an iron chin. I'm thinking Usman will beat all gimmicks out of Colby, after the second fight Covington will return to his early humble self.

He was able to out strike Colby, Burns, and masvidal and even then in the first fight with Mas he basically wrestle fucked him via clinch a la Randy-Vera.

Woodley had a nuclear bomb in his hand so wrestling made sense / Usman wasn't as good a striker then as he is now.

If he can out strike Burns/Colby/Masvidal he basically out strike anyone at WW and doesn't need to wrestle.

Wrestling is taxing on the body, I think Woodley eluded to this a week ago. It's great for building up cardio but it's extremely straining on the body especially the older you get as fighter.
I think Usman realized this fact and like the intelligent fighter he is, he's utilizing some boxing as to mitigate his body deterioration and allow him to extend his career as much as possible.
