The question is below the paragraph

Hey, I've taken BJJ for two years now and moved to an area where they don't offer it. So I decided to go out and try HS wrestling(folkstyle). My first night was horrible- I felt like I could have won some of the live matches if it was submission, but I was pinned 3/4 of the time. ( The last one, I snuck a triangle choke on a guy ,* yes he did pass out but i let go and then reversed him*). My second practice-now knowing some of the applications in wrestling-used my "experience" to pin 3/4 of my opponents two of which had wrestled for atleast 7 years combined. The fourth guy I dint pin took me down and I used the gaurd to set him up for a reversal and took his back. I sunk my hooks in and he was like "Oh shit". After that he asked me where I learned to use my legs like that- I say "jujisu" reeaaaal fast and he bow down to me.

Is there any body else like that in my predictament? going from BJJ to folkstyle? Any tips on how to use BJJ positional strategy or legal subs or soemthing?

wow, you triangled a guy in wrestling. Why didn't you start dropping bombs, when they stick their head out just deliver a clean left hook and when he drops to the mat Ko'd you just pin him for the win.

lol...oh yeah its wrestling I forgot!! I'm allowed to throw palm strikes and choke him of the top ring!!! DUH!

you realise that in a real match, pulling guard or trying to triangle somebody, is not going to help you. Pulling guard will get you pinned, and triangling somebody will get you pinned first, then dq'd.

First, find out what wrestling is. You obviously don't know.

definetly not cool to triangle someone in a wrestling match

First off- I didnt pull guard, I just used it to prevent them from getting a dominant position. It's the only way I feel comfortable on my back right now. I got a lot of compliments from guys who had no idea what I was doing.

Second off- Yeah I do need to find out what wrestling is like, thats why I'm asking if anyone can help me. I dont expect to use pure BJJ in wrestling match, I want to know wrestling, just as I would want to learn BJJ in a BJJ match.

Thirdly- I'm asking if any one has any tips that can help me break some habits- like using open guard or sinking hooks in on somebody when you have back control. Whatever I can get from this will help me greatly in BJJ or maybe even Pro MMA.

Of course this is sherdog....so I don't expect to get any REAL advice for another five flame posts.

dont use guard period! the goal is to stay off of your back. maybe that might help a little. the people complimenting you have no idea what they or you are doing. You are obviously on j.v., so try and look into some of the j.v practices. Or just ask some friends, there are always younger kids that are good wrestlers that can help you.

^^^Thanks Jack- I'll try to stop using guard, It's a big habit for me though. I have a pretty good idea about whats going on, and I'm learning all the moves for pins...I used the same technique for the pin three times. Hopefully I'll get more techniques like that while its open mat season. When Nov. comes around, I have to know my stuff- otherwise I'm not gonna get anybody to correct me.

You are trying to submit people and reverse from being on your back in wrestling.

Newsflash: the objective of wrestling is to pin someone on their back. Not choke them unconscious. Not put your hooks in. Not take their back.

Don't go to wrestling and use jiujitsu. It'd be like going to boxing and throwing liver kicks, it's the wrong place to be using those techniques and the people you are sparring with are playing by the rules while you are not.

If you want to learn how to wrestle, learn how to wrestle. If you want to do sub grappling, do sub grappling. Don't go to a class for one and try to do the other.

As for this...

The tampon machine is in the ladies room, FYI.

LOL

Props to Sauron and Superbeast. Got to love those direct responses!

Hayliks (a former wrestler) would have a field day with this sort of thread.

he also had little regard for anyones feelings and self-esteem. hed be having fun right now thats for sure.

Yes, he was a bit of a prick quite often but he could bring the hammer down (of course at someone else's expense).

I recall that he freaked out on me quite vociferously when I questioned his statement that he'd certainly win the blue belt in the Mundials in 2003 or 2004.

Well, if you set hooks, just get an inside grip on their wrists/forearms and try and flatten them out.

Technically, arm triangles are very legal under the auspices of folkstyle wrestling.

Don't know what the rules are where you're from, but pretty much anything that cuts the blood supply off is considered a choke and is therefore illegal. We had a certain state champion who went on to wrestle DI at Harvard who had a front headlock that he made people pass out with. He placed the thumb side of his hand just right on the side of the neck and knocked people out for a second or two. He would then score at will on them until they regained thier senses. Eventually the refs caught on and whistled for a stalemate if he held a front headlock any longer than 5 seconds or so, lol. Nick Simmons of MSU is accused of doing the same thing.

Anyways, to the original thread starter, just forget about anything BJJ while wrestling. There is hardly anything that crosses over effectively. There are no legal subs you can use, so forget about it. BTW thats fucking gay you choked some kid out in a triangle in a wrestling match. He was just trying to wrestle by the rules and you pull that shit. I hope the next kid you triangle powerbombs the shit out of you like Rampage-Arona.

I remember thatttt, what was that guys name. It made me laugh everytime.

you can't triangle or use guard in wrestling as that puts you on your back = pin

i've never really heard of anyone going from bjj to competing in freestyle wrestling (usually bjj guys will take up wrestling to improve their bjj game not the other way around) ... yes i can see how bjj can help you there but you can't use any back game you use in bjj since the whole points of wrestling is to stay of your back

youd need to roll around for a while before you got wrestling instincts down. When thrown in wrestling a wrestler doesnt have to think twice about going to his stomach while in bjj they will just pull guard. I dont even see how you pulled gaurd without being pinned but... whatever.

also chokes are illegal unless you have an arm with it. and figure fours (triangle choke) arent legal unless they are going in for a shot and you are over them.

so pretty much i call work on everything youve said but for some help... just learn wrestling from a wrestler and put the bjj tools down because it will be counterproductive and will get you into a lot of penalties
