The White House confirms a US government aid agency was behind a text-message service that was allegedly designed to foment unrest in Cuba.

ZunZuneo, dubbed a "Cuban Twitter", had 40,000 subscribers at its height in a country with limited web access, reports the Associated Press.

The project is said to have lasted from 2009-12 when the grant money ran out.

The US reportedly hid its links to the network through shell firms and by routing messages via other countries.

There has been no official Cuban government reaction to the story.

American tax dollars hard at work by destabilizing foreign regimes. Perhaps Cuba is the next one to get besmirched after Ukraine?

US fears Commanism.

It must be still stuck in the 50s.

Well I guess I can support this type of foreign intervention... Better than arming thugs so they can topple the government to create an even worse government (but friendly to American business) like America loves to do in Latin America. But I know if America could arm them they would.

Communism needs to come to an end in Cuba but with Americas track record in Latin America I'm a bit worried. Is it a coincidence that nations that had American backed right wing puppet governments are all left wingers now? Nicaragua, Cuba, Venezuela, etc.

These shitty governments make the people think socialism is the answer / capitalism is wrong.

Sounds like a little pilot project.

Those darned Americans spreading their social media in an attempt to allow those dominated by totalitarian regimes a chance to communicate with each other.

I don't think whoever is behind projects like this cares about the people in said country.

More likely they were testing the waters to see if they could cause some conflict.

God damn amateurs don't know how to keep a good thing on the down low #indyref

Our Cuban policy remains arguably the stupidest American foreign policy stance of all time.

Yes you're totally doing it for the wellbeing of Cubans and not for the purpose of undermining the government so you can geopolitically dominate the country. Oh and those are totally legit social media companies and not some shell cover-ups funded by the Department of State.

Another example of why I am not very fond of USA. More state-sponsored violence for geopolitical and economical outcomes.

Of cause the mouth breathers will come in and just retort by saying "oh you just hate murrrika."

Didnt realize the US is using the foreign-policy playbook from the Cold War era still.

Castro originally wanted to be buddies with US after Batista was overthrown. He even went to US right after the Cuban Revolution to make friends. Unfortunately, Eisenhower was more interested in playing a golf game than meeting him due to ideological differences. Castro was then forced to join USSR's camp instead, fearing US would attempt to topple the new regime.

I would also argue that sanctions against Cuba are what kept the Communist regime alive all these years. If US opens up trade and travel to Cuba, the government would be replaced in a matter of months after Cubans see how good they could have it.
