Is it just me or have there been a lot of champions that people perceived as potential long term belt holders just get either utterly dethroned or embarrassed? I'm not really sure of the exact details of the times that people held belts etc so I apologise if I'm off, but it seems like there are a lot of strong favourites in the betting lines getting beaten recently, particularly the champions?
Obviously there was Ronda, one of the biggest upsets in UFC history. Then there's TJ Dillashaw who for all the world looked to be one of the P4P best (he came up against Dominick Cruz so fair enough, but Dom was an outsider in that fight), then Aldo's 10 year reign came to end in utterly crazy fashion, Pettis got destroyed by RDA who is also a destroyer in his own right but Pettis almost looked unbeatable, no major upsets in the 170lbs for a while (belt wise, anyway), Chris Weidman was literally unbeatable before Rockhold (imo) dismantled him and left no doubt, Cormier/Jones there is outside influence, obviously, and then Werdum upsetting Cain in the title fight... I'm not sure on American odds but Cain was 1/5 (big, big favourite) in their fight.
My grasp on fighters' skills and techniques probably isn't comparable to some of the people on here, is there a shift in the techniques that people are developing? It's such a young sport that I think there are a lot of edges and holes to be found to exploit... Anyone got an insight into why there are so many fighters who seem like they'll stroll fights just get soundly beaten? Apologies that I can't offer much insights of my own but I'm interested to hear some decent responses.
