Hey guys I was watching fights in espn and seen a guy throw a uppercut with his thumb pointed towards him almost? Is this a liable punch or was it just out of mistake? I googled some uppercut variations regarding this and here's a pic of what I'm talking about? Does anyone know of this punch?

I was told that this variation was a good way to sneak in a lead uppercut between the opponents boxing gloves.

Exactly my first thought.....prone to injury somewhere. But looks like a quick shot to score points, no?

I'd rather score hurt on the other guy...and points, then risk hurt and possible points.

So would you just never throw this kind of punch or does it have a few applications?

I just noticed your new av. I was playing SSF4 a few days back and a friend of mine, that has trained for the better part of ten years, commented on how perfect Dudley's form was.

Golovkin does the same it's probably just to get through the opponents guard more easily rather than doing much damage. I doubt you are going to hurt your hands if you don't throw it with 100% power (if you don't have severe hand problems) and you don't have to throw with full power every time so why not if you can't get through the opponents guard with a conventional uppercut. But it's probably more of a setup for other punches or to score points and not a single damaging punch
