Update (still overrated): Can somebody explain why NYC is so great?

NYC is alright.

It was way better back in the bad old days before all the strip clubs and porn shops were shut down in Time Square. It had character, it had culture, and it had that je ne sais quoi that only comes from having a seedy underbelly. Now it's just a playground for the rich and a tourist destination.

Plenty of cities I'd rather go to than NYC.

So? Id rather have that then fvking rats running over me. TTC is newer, cleaner, and better maintained. Plus ttc had above ground street cars.

Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world with food from literally every culture. It had better selection than all but the largerl Murkan cities. Also Toronto is big about fitness and being active and has lots of healthy choices most Murkan cities don't. Most ethnic murkan food is altered and watered down to appeal to bland Murkan palates. They take out the spice and add more fat and carbs.

LMFAO @ Buffalo. Buffalo is a zhithole compared to Toronto. Old 19th century buildings compared to newer skyscrapers? Plz son.

Toronto is a huge party City that attracts people, including hot women from all over the world. I'm thinking you've never been there or just passed through.
Hah. Guessing you're one of those try-hard Torontonians/Ontarians who likes to puff up the poor-man's world city. Toronto isn't fit to lick the arses of some of the big American cities. And the whole "it has better selection than all but the biggest of American cities" - it's bigger than all but two American cities so it had better have something to show for it. As it is it is basically New York lite with a less of, and a worse version of, some of the things New York has. Even in Canada you're better off visiting a more distinctive Canadian city like Vancouver or Montreal than the generic big city that is Toronto.

The sad thing is, I don't even like New York much. If you're comparing it to Toronto though there is no comparison. One is the template for a big American city that has several world leading scenes to jump between in it, and the other one is a sad copy of that template, doing much of the same stuff but less of it and not as well.

I’ve driven through it a bunch of times, If I have to go to one I try to get
Yes. Vegas is real spread out. I live on the west side and never go to the strip
I don’t blame you, most of the guys I know live around Henderson.

Henderson is nice. Lots of good restaurants and their old downtown area is really cool but it has grown too big too fast. Traffic is bad there. West side is best imo. Ive lived just about everywhere here at one point or another.

I’ll be there Halloween, NHRA is in town

With all that said, I also lived in Philly in addition go NYC.

I prefer Philadelphia. It's like NYC's less ADHD cousin. You still have food, diversity, bars, attractions, things to do and all that, just much less bullshit.

Except for the parking... Philadelphia has the worst parking in the world.

Again better public transit; subway, street cars, buses, ferries=Toronto
More diverse selection + better food + healthier=Toronto. You can find any kind of food: Caribbean/Jamaican,Chinese,Vietnamese,Mexican,Italian,Korean,Japanese,Portuguese,French,etc.
Cleaner streets + less poverty=Toronto
Huge skyscrapers not that far from amazing parks, lakes, and nature=Toronto

Dirty, old style less well-maintained public transit=NYC
Rats running around on the subway biting people=NYC
Lots of poverty amidst a few interesting attractions=NYC
People who are more rude and obnoxious=NYC

Also, the 9/11 Memorial has a barrier to prevent you from getting close to the glass while the CN Tower has a glass floor and full glass walls from floor to ceiling=Toronto>NYC.

New Yorkers live in a box stacked on top of each other like rats.
It's a big city, kid. Not all of it looks like what they show in the movies.

Used to go to a pub called the Blarney Stone for corned beef sandwiches when I'd go to Ranger games, but it's closed now. No reason to go to the city anymore.

Lombardi's is great. Very reasonably priced and the pizza is cooked in their original 1905 oven (made 114 years ago):

But yeah I agree NYC is a little overrated and the winters suck. I prefer LA, since I grew up in the suburbs in the LA area and struggle to adjust to harsh winters. Plus LA has In-N-Out, and good Mexican food. Their pizza has improved a lot too (even if they don't have coal ovens)

The cost of living is killer. Happy only being there a few months of the year.
Winters suck ass, and it feels as if it getting worse, imo.
Lombardi’s is one of the best, More favored prolly than Patsys, but I prefer Patsys as it’s a lil crisper I feel.
Also got one very close by to me, a short walk in the UES.

It's like a slightly more intense version of Toronto, but pales in comparison to Tokyo, Seoul and even somewhere like Mumbai - visiting those countries felt like I was walking into somewhere truly foreign and exciting.
Lol, there you have it. You WERE visiting somewhere foreign and exciting in those cities.

people that don't like NYC are the ones that go there and see all the tourist shit and go to bed at 9pm every night.

last time i went out with friends in NYC i didn't get back until 8am and i passed out on a chair in the hotel lobby. i don't even remember how i got into my room. when i finally woke up, i had a massive slice of pizza stuffed inside my pocket and my wallet was duct taped to my leg for some reason (under my pants).

yea, i fuckin love that city.

Most associate NYC with the tourist bullshit... If you experience the underbelly of the city you will understand.

It's great for a visit but I could never live there. I would say the same for any city- basically like all huge cities, too many people, not enough urban planning, too expensive.

I'd much rather be in the woods.

Update:

Flying out tomorrow, and my opinion of the city remains relatively unchanged.

I went to see Book of Mormon on Broadway (funny in parts, but juvenile), walked the skyline (legitimately beautiful) and wondered around Brooklyn China Town, and Mid Town.

Food was meh - I tried some places featured on China Mac's YouTube channel, but can't say I was blown away. Pizza can only be so good, and I've had better Pho in Toronto.

Public transit is fucked on weekends - half the lines didn't work, and the shuttle buses were packed and slow.

Surprising positives are that people are very friendly - I got lost like the bumpkin that I am, and locals were happy to help. All the people I came across (waiters etc) were very polite and generally just nice people.

I would not come back again unless work related.

New York and London are both super overrated (at least for a person like me - I can understand the appeal if your young and looking for a place that's always seems on the go).

This guy fuckin gets it. NYC is all about the scenes. Which scenes am I referring to? Take your damn pick. Music, food, art, athletics, drugs, technology, its all represented in New York. Hell even the NYC suburbs are like no other place on earth. The only thing NY doesn't control is movies and that's made up for by complete domination of live theater and live performances in general. If you can't see why the city is great, you either missed your scene or you don't have one.

It's an upholstered toilet full of America hating liberals.

LOL, what shit hole do you live at? In the mountains with the rest of the cool hillbillys?
It's also funny how you call them "american hating liberals" when you're the one hating on them LOL. The irony is lost on you aint it?
