Update (still overrated): Can somebody explain why NYC is so great?

NYC can be
Damn for real?
Yes, Chinatown basically expanded into little Italy, all those nice bakery’s and little cafes are gone, now it’s louie Chan’s chop suey and Johnny Lee’s taste of HK, the Italian’s only have one block now

Lombardi's is great. Very reasonably priced and the pizza is cooked in their original 1905 oven (made 114 years ago):

But yeah I agree NYC is a little overrated and the winters suck. I prefer LA, since I grew up in the suburbs in the LA area and struggle to adjust to harsh winters. Plus LA has In-N-Out, and good Mexican food. Their pizza has improved a lot too (even if they don't have coal ovens)

Head Uptown to the George Washington Bridge. Climb over the rail then jump off.

I’ve visited twice, but I wouldn’t live there.

I hate living in a city. I’ve had to do it most of my life due to my career, but I’m retiring in the countryside in 3 years, and the nearest town will be less than 5,000 people.

It’s not.

If you’re super rich (like make over a million a year) then it can be interesting with ultra swanky restaurants trying to one up each other, night life all night.

Otherwise it’s dirty, crowded, expensive, and difficult to live in.

It's a shithole full of filth and rude people. I dread every time I have to go there on business.

There's a lot to do and has all the benefits of a giant city diverse but it has some big drawbacks. How expensive it is, crowded, lots of rude people, how expensive it is. It seems like it would suck even more if you have a car. It's even more expensive with all the tolls/fees/parking, more of hassle driving and finding parking and you run into more rudeness with a car. I gotta imagine cold winters aren't the greatest there whether you're a driver or not.

Third time visiting the city, and each time I am left with a ''that's it ?" feeling.

Don't get me wrong, its got a diverse array of neighborhoods, attractions and sites, but it doesn't strike me as being materially different thatn other large urban city's.

It's like a slightly more intense version of Toronto, but pales in comparison to Tokyo, Seoul and even somewhere like Mumbai - visiting those countries felt like I was walking into somewhere truly foreign and exciting.

I'm here for 2 more days, so I'm open to suggestions for ways to save this trip.

PS: My favorite part of the trip was seeing the city rats eating a sandwich in the subway.

I started a thread of how NYC is overrated somewhere online and people came for my head. I mentioned it on Sherdog as well.

I'm a Native New Yorker, not some sheltered kid from Nebraska who had an orgasm because they saw buildings for the first time.

I know NYC has its pros, but for cons it's:

*clears throat*

Dirty
Overcrowded

Traffic sucks

There is never any parking because with multiple people per house there are more cars than parking spots.

Even fewer parking spots when there's alternate side parking or a mound of snow blocks some during the winter. Which leads me to...

Shitty weather

Shitty roads and potholes everywhere

People are assholes

It is (at least was when I was growing up) crime-ridden

There's always some construction causing traffic.

If you decide to take public transportation, construction delays or rerouted trains+buses which can make you super late for work and it's beyond your control.

Trains and buses are usually overcrowded with smelly degenerates anyway.

I'm getting long-winded. I can go on, but I'll stop there.

NYC is one of the best places on earth. But you have to specify Manhattan. When in Manhattan there are small neighborhoods that have different feels and vibes, cuisine, people. That’s what makes city amazing.

Best way to describe Manhattan is a date I had with my wife last year.

We woke up and walked the Highline. It’s on old elevated track converted into a garden walk. In NYC style, people that live in apartments along the way hang art and make it crazy visual.

Then we went to Central Park. We had Dirty water dogs and a knish, and napped/sunned on huge rocks overlooking a playground. We walked over and spent an hour in the Met checking out Dali and Picasso paintings.

We ate at Bobby Flays Bar Amercain. Food was amazing. We then decided to get to the East Village and go bar hopping. Some truly cool and unique places. Speakeasy, local spots, we got tuned up. Saw some live music, sat near A few guys from the band Sum 41.
Easy to cab it or Uber, or subway.

We slowly made our way back toward Hells Kitchen where we were staying and ended up at the rooftop bar of our hotel overlooking the Hudson. The place was almost pitch black. Very cool. They played old black and white movies on an outside wall.

We walked down and grabbed a slice before going to bed. I remember thinking it was the best slice I ever had. That’s Manahattan.

Great place to visit but I absolutely hated living there. When I first left people would ask me what I liked best about the city and my instant reply was ' the departure gate at JFK'. Looking back there were some really nice restaurants, beautiful women. I liked the running/jogging culture. Shopping was pretty good and my girls loved ice skating at Bryant park so long as we got there early. Nice little hidden park on 50th or 51st and between 2nd and 3rd.

One thing I like about Boston is that Chinatown is completely separate from Little Italy (North End) and the North End is protected. That's why the North End shits all over Little Italy these days.

every time i've visited nyc, i've gotten laid. so who am i to hate on the place lol.

For the same reason Cunner is perceived as so great, all marketing and illusion aimed at the gullible..

Seriously? I will forever be indebted to Toronto and the great nation of Canada but if in being real Toronto is one of the most boring and souless cities ever. It's hard to imagine that Toronto>NYC

What makes NYC so great? It is just as soulless if not moreso.

Off the bat both the public transit and food are better in Toronto than NYC, plus Toronto is much cleaner. Theres tons more to delve into but just those things make a huge difference.

Anybody that says anything in Canada is > Murcia is a damn socialist commie.

Best time in New York is Christmas or thanksgiving day if hate crowds. Early Sunday morning in the park is also awesome.

Or week before Christmas, thanksgiving, or new year if you like crushing crowds, tourists, pickpockets, long lines, and communicable diseases.

Restaurants also ok. But honestly rest of world has largely caught up.

Haven't been to New York since I was a kid, I remember it being very fun then, (but I guess everything is fun and looks amazing when you are a kid) , my parents took me for christmas 1983, I remember I kept looking up at the buildings thinking they were all so tall. I remember we brought some cotton candy and it was bright green, I couldn't believe it because I only ever seen cotton candy in pinkish color, haha I was like amazed.
