i am a purple belt and i was drilling with a white belt today and he started of buy saying how he was new and that he wanted me to keep him right. By the end of class you would have thought he was a black belt the amount of advise on moves he was giving me. saying "no grip this way" "move your legs that way" 80% of the stuff he said was wrong and the rest was obvious and i was doing it that way anyway.

and at one point he was saying to two blue belts what they were doing wrong WTF???

of cource i tryed to be polite and say "yes yes" when he told me shit but by the end of class i could hardly control my contempt.

anyone experence anything like this ??

how do you react???

are you a noob who does this ?? if yes than why??

I've just started BJJ, and I think that's just plain arrogant and disrespectful. I think if you're a white belt and you get to roll with a purple then you simply listen to what he has to say.

I'd understand if it was another whitebelt he was talking to, and it was something that he actually knew about, but trying to constantly instruct a higher belt isn't right. I'd advise trying to catch up with him before/after class and talking to him about it, but try to make sure there's nobody around, so he doesn't feel like you are trying to make him look bad.

Good luck man

I get this a lot too. I'm a two stripe blue and occasionally teach new guys at my main gym and sometimes I just wanna yell SHUT UP!

White belts gripping on for life during guard pass drills, telling other blues their feet/arms/legs positioning was wrong etc just shits me and is disrespectful.

The other day a new guy turned up late, then went 100% in rolling till he was gassed. My instructor asked him to have a roll and he said "no, I'm tired'. I dont know about other gyms but when my instructor asks if I want a roll its not a question, its an invitation to learn and you drag your tired ass onto the mat anyway and give it your best.

Exactly.

In fact, I never turn down a chance to roll with a blue or higher. If they ask, you roll.

Been there. Odds are, it was some combination of arrogance and social ineptitude. Sometimes new guys are desperate to fit in, so they try to act the part, even when it comes across wrong. Hopefully it's just misplaced enthusiasm and he'll outgrow it.

But the nice thing about the BJJ dynamic is that after this guy drives you nuts for half an hour, it's well within your right to manhandle the crap out of him. I'm not saying that you should hurt a guy like this, but it helps to remind him that his theory won't mean much when a purple belt is introducing his bellybutton to his spine. Sadly, this is frequently the only way some guys learn respect.

yeah I had the same stuff from a white belt last week ...
We were working on knee on belly techniques and he looked at me and told me he would go easy on me and try not to put too much weight on me ... Like he was doing me a favor or something so I tried not to laugh and be polite ...
Damn I don't know what's up with some new guys but they tend to think they know better ... Silly silly people :D

You should tell him to focus on his own game, being a white belt. If he gives you attitude, then tap him as much as possible, and tell others in the gym to as well, until he's ready to learn.

The only tip i give the blue's and purples is wow that one hurt more than the last one haha

Im a white and occasionally try to help the whites that are newer than me. I feel a little uncomfortable doing it because I'm just a white but I can't help it. When one of my classmates is doing something wrong I try to help them out. Should I refrain from this as well? I read a few opinions that only instructors should teach. I don't mind keeping my mouth shut if thats the protocol. No one i n class has ever told me to stop, but I don't wan tthem to think badly of me in their heads. I'm naturally the type of person that is always talking and interacting so its hard for me to turn it off in class.

But as far as trying to help higher belts. haha thats just ridiculous. I try to absorb anything I can from them. My school is fairly small and the higher belts are like gods compared to us whites. I've never even seen a white tap a blue or higher in my school.

dude when i am rolling drilling with a people i am talking all the time discussing angles grips asking how it feels, getting feed back from my partner.

it speeds up the learning process and is good for everyone

you are doing the right thing man

what i object to is being told what to do by some one with the creases still in there gi or being told the wrong thing buy someone i am far superior than in terms of bjj

i have a serious question. I'm a white belt and well one time a purple asked to roll with me so i did and he owned me as expected anyways afterwards we were talking about the roll
and i said to him that his triangle wasn't in really deep and that how i had my arm it didn't have pressure.... was this disrespectful???? after i told him that he told me he was trying an inverse triangle just to attempt it.
Be honest with me was it messed up for me to say it wasn't choking me how it was or was i helping him in the end cuz he could learn to adjust......

Yeah, see I USED to get this but as soon as the black belt was around my waist it stopped. Right up until brown I was getting "advice".

When I DID get it is usually stopped after I threw the lower grade around a bit.

I dont mind a bit of suggestion and advice though. I usually ask for it and I'm happy to learn from whoever has some input.

Just sometimes they approach it wrong, like they are "teaching" you and you are just some n00b. And half the time the advice is wrong - or the advice is right, but not for the thing you're currently practicing.

No - that's OK.

As long as it doesn't come across as being "you couldn't choke me, I'm t3h sh*t".

But if it's genuine feedback and not just you trying to puff your chest out, then it's OK.

You NEED feedback from your training partners, regardless of whether they are higher or lower. Just don't try to "preach".

They can't talk at all while you are choking them, just something to keep in mind

No, mate - judo. WAAAY better then some BJJ black-belt :icon_twis

i have done both and am a brown belt in judo i notice i get given advice less in judo for some reason maby because there is less oportunity to chat in judo but i am not sure.

Quick question for you or any other judo guys.

In my class we love when we have a judo day. We have a sick judo bb that takes over a class maybe once or twice a month and everyone loves it. My question is do judo players share the same enthusiasm for bjj as we do for judo? Or is there a sense of snobbiness because judo is an olympic sport and all?

No - no sense of snobbiness.

All the animosity and snobbiness you find are on the internet. And if you do find someone with this attitude they are ignorant boneheads who never step outside their own dojo, ;et alone their own style.

Not all judoka share enthusiasm for BJJ - like not all BJJers know/care about judo. I'd say there's a fair bit of ignorance about BJJ, which is lessening more and more as BJJ membership grows.

Some, like me - really enjoy BJJ. If I had the time, I'd train it a lot more (especially no-gi). I'm toying with the idea of giving up judo for a while and focusing on getting a few solid months of BJJ in, maybe a few privates too - since theres areas of my ground game that have big holes (from a BJJ perspective) especially half-guard work.
