Cancel the fight. Period. Pay the fighter who made weight his show and win money and that's it. It's not fair to him. He gets put in a position where he has to accept or be shunned by the UFC and declared a "pussy" by the MMA community. Fighters that realize they can't make weight can turn it around into a huge advantage. See Romero Rockhold.

Agree with premise, but not your example.

The athletic commission person in charge of the weigh ins cut Yoel's time short and didn't give him the alloyed two hours. She was later seen at a Cubs game.

Because that ho had someplace to be Yoel is robbed for the rest of his life from being a UFC champ. He had 2 hours within established protocol to make weight and less than 1.5 pounds to lose. It was dumb of him to play games with it, but there are rules and allowances and if they were followed his would have a UFC title on his resume, that was taken from him by a bitch that had a place to be and put her social life over her job.

Edit: this occured for the Whittaker fight in Chicago, Yoel fucked up the Rockhold weigh in all on his own, but was robbed at an opportunity to hold the undisputed title in the Whittaker rematch.

at least that is how I remember the story. He definitely didn't get the 2 hours and missed by less than 2 pounds.

The issue i dont think is that, but lets say a main event guy misses weight, you dont call every fight off, thats not how combat sports work, you rarely see high profile fighters miss weight tho, and even if they do you almost never or never see a high profile fight being scrapped because of a missed weight, it doesnt work like that, even if fighters are entitled to refuse the fight, its in their right to do so its rare that fighters take that option, in MMA (i think its MMA and not a UFC rule) they go by a percentage, but in boxing they have crazy clauses sometimes, the fighter that misses weight usually pays a HUGE amount like in Chavez Jr. vs Jacobs, he lost 1M of his purse.

Lot of things would be different if the UFC did what is fair to fighters.
The whole weight thing is controlled by the AC, the UFC would promote open weight fights if they could.

If you miss weight you have an automatic point deduction. Also, every pound you miss by corresponds to giving 20% of your purse to your opponent. If you miss by 5 lbs or more then you give up your entire purse and have to do 50 volunteer hours for a childhood obesity organization.

I like it.

There would be way more last minute "injuries" but I appreciate your vindictive punitive attitude.

I support the point deduction. That to me is fair, mitigate the advantage a bit as they would need to win all three rounds for a win and a 29-28 "win" becomes a draw.

A lot of organisations already do a point deduction. I don't know if the reason the UFC don't do it is because of them or the ACs

Of course you say cancel the fight, you don't stand to lose tons of money if the fight doesn't happen

Fighters don't take the fight because they will be shunned by the UFC and the fans if they don't, they take it because they want/need to

I do agree the penalty should be worse though

Keep pay low, keep these guys in need.

Nah. Just dock their pay more. They all hydrate and gain 20 pounds for the fight anyway.

So he only wins when he doesn't try to make weight and misses by 3lbs
Nah. Well, first off he only missed twice - won one, lost the other. So you're wrong on this here. But I'm just saying, all the PED shenanigans, weight stuff, gifted title shots - weaselly stuff seems to work short term but how many guys you can name who got away with it long term?

He can say "Yay! I rigged the weight! I beat Luke!", but here we are in 2021. Luke actually became UFC champ (which you can never take away from him, he even holds a win over the champ who beat him - it's not like we don't know he can beat Bisping), he is 3-3 in his last 6 and still fighting in the top organization. Meanwhile, Romero is 1-5 and in Bellator.

So, I think these things kind of even themselves out, eventually. Maybe not mathematically and proportionally, but anyone who wants to weasel around is kind of setting themselves up anyway. So there's no point in micromanaging, just let them cheat, if they want to.

Funny you say that while mentioning Bisping who lost an eye because someone decided to cheat.

You can't fix it. The organization requests for last minute replacements all the time. It's not like you can say no too many times. They will cut you.

You have to think about the fans too that have paid money to see the fights. If just cancel automatically, then you are robbing them at least partial of what that paid to see. To me the penalties should be harsher. At least half your purse. If it's a title fight then it becomes non-title. No win money and not eligible for any bonuses.

missing weight needs to be given more leeway imo.

fighters should just accept that the fighter missed weight and fight anyway, take 20% of their purse and thats it.

stop being cry babies.

buds, romero won because he knocked luke the fuck out. and to make up for it he kissed him better.
